Mark Hamill’s time with Star Wars might be done, but there’s no shortage of storytelling opportunities with Luke Skywalker. There’s a huge period of unaccounted time between Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so any prequel could draw from that timeline for another Luke Skywalker movie. Then the question becomes who do you cast as Luke? If you’re asking the internet, that answer is Sebastian Stan. However, Hamill thinks any prequel with Luke should go further back in time and he thinks Jacob Tremblay would be a great choice for a child Luke Skywalker.
“It depends on what point in Luke’s life that you would have him be in the movie because at first, I’m thinking … the whole point of Luke was that he was bored silly with his life. All he was doing was bulls eyeing wamp rats in his T-16. Now, if they could do now where they have five or six plots and you’re cutting around what’s going on all around him and they keep cutting back to a really young Luke, I thought, ‘The one I love is Jacob Tremblay.”
Mark Hamill was recently honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in an interview with Variety, he said that he loved the idea of Jacob Tremblay playing a young Luke Skywalker. Hamill points out that the idea of a young Luke Skywalker is tough because the whole catalyst for Star Wars is that Luke didn’t have anything else going on in his life. But if Lucasfilm has any need for a young child Skywalker to look longingly at the sunset, then they should get the contact info for Tremblay. Tremblay has proven himself to be an impressive young talent, having starred in Room, an Oscar contender, and Wonder, a nice uplifting movie to put a smile on your face. He was also in The Book of Henry, but we can’t fault him for that.
Telling prequel stories is all the rage with Star Wars and fans can likely expect no stone unturned when it comes to finding stories to tell. We’ve already got Solo: A Star Wars Story hitting theaters soon so it seems like only a matter of time before Luke Skywalker finds his way back on the big screen. Having Luke be a child is an interesting idea, and it could work in the sense that he wouldn’t be the main character. Should an Obi-Wan movie ever happen, that would pretty much be the perfect opportunity for it.
Who knows when we’ll see young Luke Skywalker, but we’ll definitely be seeing young Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, in theaters May 25, 2018.
