‘Star Wars’ Crosses $100 Million at Imax Theaters

Via variety.com:

The latest Star Wars movie broke the $1 billion mark before fans in China could see it, but producers anticipate “The Force Awakens” will play “very very well” in the world’s second-biggest film market.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has set another record, crossing the $100 million mark in worldwide grosses in a dozen days at Imax screens.

The performance by Disney’s space saga demolished the previous Imax record set by “Jurassic World,” which hit the $100 milestone in 18 days. The $106 million Imax total represents nearly 10% of the $1.09 billion worldwide haul for “The Force Awakens.”

The movie set Imax records on its opening weekend with $48 million — $30 million in the U.S. and $18 million internationally. During its second frame, the seventh “Star Wars” movie took in another $27.2 million at the worldwide box office, with $18.6 million from 391 domestic locations and $8.6 million from 282 international sites.

Imax noted that “The Force Awakens” reached $70 million domestically in 11 days, which was nearly three times faster than “Avatar,” which crossed that milestone in 30 days.

The film has reached $36.6 million in international grosses so far at Imax screens. It opens in China on Jan. 9.
