Fans clamored in excitement last month when we received production news for “Episode VII” from the official Star Wars website.
“Disney and Lucasfilm are excited to announce that principal photography on Star Wars: Episode VII, directed by J.J. Abrams, will commence May 2014, and will be based at London’s historic Pinewood Studios.”
Some new information has come to light, however. On April 2nd, Alan Horn sat down the Hollywood Reporter and let slip some interesting details. He confirmed that filming had, in fact, already begun. This is a direct contradiction from the press release by Lucasfilm in March. He then went on to talk about casting as well. “We have a lot of them [in place],” Horn commented about the main actors, whose names have not been revealed yet. “We’re just not completely done yet.”
Horn was also questioned about the script, which was a source of many rumors last year when Michael Arndt left the project. “It’s all about the screenplay,” he said. “It has to be screenplay, screenplay, screenplay.” When the Hollywood Reporter questioned if the script was where it needed to be, he replied, “It actually is now.”
He wrapped up the interview by commenting about the timeframe for “Episode VII.” Horn said “Episode VII” will be picking up the saga “where 6 left off — and where 6 left off is 35 years ago by the time this is released.” Again this is a direct contradiction from the press release last month that claimed “Episode VII” would be set 30 years after “Return of the Jedi.”
Obviously there are several contradictions between Lucasfilm’s and Disney’s statements that might be just the beginning of attempts spread confusion. It would make sense if this was just a way to avoid leaks, suspicion, and scrutiny. You can check out the full interview at this link.
