This winter, the Star Wars universe will grow a little bigger when the Skywalker Saga ushers in its eighth installment. The iconic sci-fi franchise is set to premiere Star Wars: The Last Jedi this December, and the film will follow Rey as the girl begins training with Luke Skywalker whilst the First Order rages on. The film recently sent fans’ hype into hyperdrive when Star Wars Celebration revealed the first trailer for The Last Jedi, and there is now more good news to bask in. Lucasfilm may be busy with the franchise’s eighth film, but Colin Trevorrow has been hard at work on Star Wars’ ninth film. And, soon, the executives over at Lucasfilm will give their say on the movie’s script.

Over on Star Wars News Net, the fan-site managed to track down a recent interview Kathleen Kennedy did with Spanish outlet E-Cartela about the franchise. It was there that president of Lucasfilm confirmed script readings of Star Wars: Episode IX would begin very soon.

“To be honest, we are beginning to talk about [the spin-offs] right now. We have four or five weeks immersed in the film ‘Han Solo’ and we are about to read the script of Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX directed, so we have a lot of work at the moment,” she explained.

Many fans already knew Episode IX was well on its way through pre-production thanks to Trevorrow. The director appeared at Cinema Con not long ago, and he revealed that the movie’s first script draft was finished.

“We’re writing, and we’re designing, and there is a draft,” Trevorrow said. “You know, we’re throwing 110 percent of our souls into it, so there will be nothing left of me when I’m done.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017 release. The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong’o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
