Though the cast of Solo: A Star Wars Story was packed to the brim with acting talent, perhaps the most exciting addition was Fleabag star and creator and Killing Eve show-runner Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who played L3-37, Lando Calrissian’s acerbic droid partner in crime. Two new behind-the-scenes clips from the film’s home-video release—it’s available September 14 on digital H.D. and September 25 on Blu-ray—reveal the unusual way L3 came together, while Waller-Bridge told Vanity Fair how her character sneakily took revenge on Han Solo.
In the video above, Lando actor Donald Glover speaks warmly of working with Waller-Bridge. As she explains, the two of them together decided that the mustachioed scoundrel and the lanky droid would have a “romance with a capital R.” Solo screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan was so taken with how Glover and Waller-Bridge expanded on the relationship that, late in the process, he added a scene between L3-37 and Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra, featuring the rare Star Wars sight of two female characters talking alone together. The subject of their chat—their respective romantic feelings for Lando and Han—doesn’t exactly pass the Bechdel test, but it’s some small progress. Lando’s attachment to L3 is so strong that when she dies in a robot uprising, he implants her consciousness in his ship, so they can be together forever.
That brings a new dimension to the original Star Wars trilogy: all the times characters talk to and about the Falcon, they’re actually referring to L3. Original Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were so excited about this concept when they first phoned Waller-Bridge about the role that they were “gabbling,” she said in an interview. The actress responded in confusion: “What? I don’t understand. I’m the ship?! I’m the what?!” Lucasfilm cheekily confirmed the connection with a “MilL3nnium Falcon” tweet.
