THE CREATION OF LAST JEDI’S GREEN MILK SCENE

Via Nerdist.com:

When you’re the only human on an island in the middle of an ocean, you have to learn to take care of yourself. In The Last Jedi, we see Luke Skywalker do so by using the natural resources on Ahch-To. He catches fish, he probably roasts porgs (I’m just being realistic), and he squeezes green milk from the thala-siren. The vivid scene isn’t gross to anyone who’s been on a dairy farm, but it caught Rey and some fans off guard. We asked creature shop head Neal Scanlan about bringing the scene to life, and he told us it’s all practical…and involved a helicopter.

“At the very beginning of the film, Rian [Johnson] said to me that he wanted to take animatronics and practical effects and put them there on a real location—he didn’t want to do certain things in the studio,” Scanlan explained. “We went to that location, we photographed that location, and we created a digital map of it so that later back at Pinewood we could recreate the rocks. When we sculpted the thala-siren—she’s a full-sized animatronic puppet and she’s about 18 feet tall—she was sculpted to fit into the rocks so that she actually looked like she was sitting in that environment.”

Rian Johnson Discusses The Evolution Of The Force In ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

Via LAtimes.com:

*Spoilers ahead*

As Obi-Wan Kenobi once told young Luke Skywalker, “The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things — it surrounds us, and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together.”

Ever since Tatooine’s favorite farm boy learned about the Force, “Star Wars” fans have devoured every bit of the universe that’s come alive in the galaxy far, far away over the course of eight movies and counting.

But in Disney’s weekend box-office smash “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” writer-director Rian Johnson (“Brick,” “Looper”) takes bold leaps and shakes up the “Star Wars” universe, sending “Force Awakens” heroes Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) further into the fight between light and dark with one surprise after another.

How much does “The Last Jedi” redefine the rules of Force physics as we know it — and what do these tantalizing new possibilities mean for the future of “Star Wars?” Who is Snoke, anyway? What exactly can Force ghosts do from beyond the astral plane? Has Kylo Ren ever kissed a girl?

Back in Los Angeles between globe-trotting appearances, a week after his star-studded premiere, Johnson answered all these burning “Star Wars” questions and more. Heavy spoiler warning: Best to read after watching “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

“The Last Jedi” takes much of what we all thought we knew about this 40-year-old franchise and how the rules of the Force work, and expands them in some wild new ways. Knowing the doors you were going to open, what were your consultations like with Lucasfilm’s in-house protectors of the canon while writing the script?

There is a man named Pablo Hidalgo who is the sweetest dude in the universe, and he’s one of several keepers of the flame at Lucasfilm. It would always be a conversation, and if the story required it and if it felt like it stretches into new territory but doesn’t break the idea of what the Force can do, Pablo was down — I got the blessing.

Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Behind-the-Scenes Photos Will Be Released In A Book

Via Slashfilm.com:

During the production of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, director Rian Johnson captured behind-the-scenes photos with his trusty 35mm camera. Some of these photos have been shown during his convention appearances, and a few more have been posted on his Instagram, but the filmmaker revealed to me during an interview that Disney and Lucasfilm Publishing are planning to release an entire book of his Last Jedi behind-the-scenes photos.

I love these behind-the-scenes photos that you’ve been posting. Are there any plans to release those in a book?

Yeah, I had that camera on my shoulder the whole shoot. I literally took thousands of shots. So we’ve been already working and on Looper, I did the exact same thing, but I just did like a little book for the crew. Because this is what it is, I think we’re gonna put together a really nice book and put it out there maybe try and do like a little exhibit or something. We print them up big or something.

That would be awesome.

It’d be fun. Yeah, they’re really there are some cool shots and it’s a nice like…

It’s almost like you have a good eye for shooting things.

It’s not even that they’re like great photos, it’s [unique] and that’s why I started doing it. I’m like the only person on set who’s not gonna get tackled if they take a picture of something sensitive. I can take a picture of anything I want. And I have this unique perspective of being right behind the camera for this whole process. So I don’t know, I think it’s interesting.

Over 20 Minutes of ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Deleted Scenes On The Blu-ray

Via Collider.com:

**May contain spoilers if you have not seen the movie yet**

At 2 hours and 32 minutes, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the longest Star Wars movie in the franchise’s history, but even so there’s quite a bit that was left on the cutting room floor. Writer/director Rian Johnson packs a lot of story into that two and a half hours and there’s really no scene in the film that doesn’t directly impact the plot, character development, or support the movie’s thematic thrust. As Johnson previously revealed to us, his initial cut of the film was around three hours long, so some significant trimming was done to get it down to a length that was manageable but didn’t lose anything that was absolutely necessary.

And now that The Last Jedi is in theaters and audiences have seen where this film goes, plenty of fans are no doubt wondering just what those deleted scenes entail. We recently spoke with Johnson and the film’s editor Bob Ducsay at a press day for the film, and the duo got specific about which Star Wars: The Last Jedi deleted scenes we’ll see on the Blu-ray.

George Lucas Says ‘The Last Jedi’ Was “Beautifully Made”

Via Hollywoodreporter.com:

Lucas spoke with director Rian Johnson after the screening.

George Lucas has seen The Last Jedi, and he was highly impressed.

The Star Wars creator recently screened the highly anticipated upcoming installment and thought it was “beautifully made,” Connie Wethington, a rep for Lucas, told Heat Vision.

“And in speaking with director Rian Johnson after viewing was complimentary,” she added.

Lucas created the world of Star Wars and directed the initial film, A New Hope, which launched the space adventure franchise in 1977.

Lucas also wrote and directed the prequels.

In 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion.

Lucas said in interviews after the sale that he had ideas for future installments, but that Disney was going to do its own thing. Director J.J. Abrams-helmed The Force Awakens, which was a monster success in 2015.

The Last Jedi opens Thursday night. Reviews for the film were released Tuesday. Currently, the film holds a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
