“This movie is going to really surprise people.”
Star Wars: The Last Jedi actor Andy Serkis, who plays Supreme Leader Snoke via performance-capture, told us over the phone this week that not only does the new trailer reflect Episode VIII’s darker tone, but that the “tension” in the film will move audiences.
“I thought the trailer was spectacular, and very intense. It absolutely reflects the tone and the feel of the movie,” Serkis said. “I do think this movie is going to really surprise people with its plotline and story and its tension in it.”
Serkis, whose directorial debut, Breathe, opened in limited release this weekend, went on to praise The Last Jedi’s director, Rian Johnson.
“Working with Rian, he’s again, a fine, fine director. He totally owned this world, and he’s a great actor’s director too,” Serkis said. “He’s really inspiring, I loved spending time with him on set, and I think he’s come up with an amazing movie.”
Serkis was far more tight-lipped, however, when pressed about Snoke’s relationship with Kylo Ren this time around and how Rey fits into Snoke’s sinister plans: “Oh man, that’s so confidential I can’t possibly talk about it. I’m sorry [Laughs], I would love to tell you…. All I can is you’re onto something.”
Although Rian Johnson previously said Snoke’s backstory won’t be detailed at length in The Last Jedi, Serkis confirmed that he himself has the skinny on the character’s past: “Oh yeah, absolutely I know it.”
