Starting this summer, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will get even more Star Wars-y. A brand new nighttime show will debut at the park replacing the current Star Wars-themed Symphony in the Stars fireworks show. The new show is much more than just a traditional fireworks show.
Disney is calling it “the most elaborate fireworks display in the history of Disney’s Hollywood Studios.” Video projections on the Chinese Theater and other buildings harken to the popular Disneyland Forever fireworks that debuted last year. Concept art for the new Star Wars fireworks shows massive fireballs shooting off the roofs along Hollywood Blvd. Large searchlights are used to simulate lightsabers during the show.
The twin suns of Tatooine, a field of battle droids, the trench of the Death Star, and Starkiller Base have all been confirmed as scenes that will be used during the video projection aspects of the show.
Some rumors now point to interactive lightsabers that use a technology similar to the ‘Glow with the Show’ items that are currently available in Disney Parks. Like the current items, including Mickey ears, the lightsabers will likely change colors in sync with the fireworks show.
The show is just one of numerous new Star Wars attractions at DHS. The Star Wars Launch Bay opened last year. A new stage show featuring Kylo Ren, Chewbacca, Darth Vader and Darth Maul will debut April 4 on the Center Stage.
A Stormtrooper march from the Launch Bay to the Center Stage will also take place multiple times each day beginning April 4.
All of this is a precursor for the groundbreaking new Star Wars land that is currently under construction at DHS. It will include at least two new rides, multiple shops and dining options and interactive elements throughout. That land is expected to be fully open by WDW’s 50th Anniversary in 2021.
