New Line and Warner Bros. have set a Dec. 16 release date for Collateral Beauty, the same day that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters.
Collateral Beauty, also starring Helen Mirren, hopes to serve as counterprogramming to the Star Wars spinoff. Edward Norton, Michael Pena and Naomie Harris also star in the drama about a New York ad man (Will Smith) who is sent into a downward spiral after a tragic event.
The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me helmer David Frankel is directing from a script by Allan Loeb. Village Roadshow Pictures is partnering with New Line on the movie.
At the same time, Warners has pulled Alcon Entertainment’s Chicken Soup for the Soul from the release calendar. An adaptation of the self-help best-seller, the film doesn’t have a new date, but the studio has indicated it would come out in 2017.
Chicken Soup for the Soul is expected to have four intersecting inspirational real-life (but fictionalized) stories. The script is being written by Lewis Colick.
Warner Bros. would release the movie via Alcon’s output deal.
