WHY WEREN’T THERE ANY STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS TOYS AT CELEBRATION?

Via Ign.com:

At this past weekend’s Star Wars Celebration, we did get a new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, news of a novelization, and a closer look at some props and costumes from the movie, but one thing integral to the Star Wars experience was missing: new toys.

It’s no secret that back when the first Star Wars movie was being developed, George Lucas passed on a bump in salary in exchange for retaining full merchandising rights to Star Wars. Lucas mined the blockbuster movie like no one before, putting out untold numbers of collectibles over the years. There were action figures of everyone from the iconic Darth Vader down to the obscure Ugnaughts — what kid wanted to play with Ugnaughts, we don’t know. The result was earning untold amounts of cash and hooking fans on the plastic stuff for life.

After so many years of being bombarded with merchandise, it was strange that not a single toy from the upcoming movie was revealed. Star Wars Celebration is like Comic-Con for the science-fantasy franchise, where all of the talent behind the upcoming movies, TV shows, comics, novels, and games make announcements about what’s coming next. So why nothing about new toys? The latest trailer is packed with new characters, sweet costumes and implausible weapons, so it’s not like they didn’t have anything to go on.
