Topps has found a way for kids of all ages to collect Star Wars trading cards. And this time your mom can’t throw them out.
Available now for iOS devices, the Star Wars: Card Trader app features hundreds and soon thousands of cards pulled from more than 30 years of the franchise featuring beloved characters, memorable locations and cool vehicles.
The app brings back vintage cards released by Topps around the time of the original movies in a digital format, and the company also plans to create original cards with new artwork based on reinterpretations of the Star Wars films.
And for those looking forward to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there are eight cards from the new film for folks to look out for at launch plus more to come.
Topps actually ran the app by Lucasfilm and Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams early on to show “we’re really honoring the spirit of not only the older Star Wars movies but obviously the upcoming, perhaps most anticipated movie ever,” says Michael Bramlage, vice president of digital for Topps.
For fans, he adds, the goal of the app “is to really make sure almost every day there’s a new card for you to covet and chase.”
The creators of the Star Wars app were inspired by the heyday of classic card collecting in the 1970s and ’80s as well as the childhood thrills of opening wax packs and never knowing what you’d get.
While there’s no sticks of bubble gum to pop into your mouth when opening these digital packs, there is still “that excitement factor and that rush of adrenaline if you draw a hit card,” Bramlage says.
There are three different tiered levels when choosing which packs to buy — plus users will get one free pack by coming back every day. Collectors can get a midlevel pack for about $1 worth of credits in the in-app Cantina.
