One of the reasons why Natalie Portman was excited to play Padme Amidala in the “Star Wars” prequels was thinking that, someday, her children could watch her. But her son, Aleph, hasn’t seen the films yet.
Why not?
Portman explained last night on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” She was there to talk about her new film, “A Tale of Love and Darkness,” but she also discussed moving back to the U.S. from France, and her 5-year-old son’s lack of “Star Wars” viewing:

“He has not [seen me in ‘Star Wars’] but he knows about it, of course. Yeah, it’s kind of a shame, because when I made it I was like, ‘This is going to be the coolest thing one day when I have kids, I can show them.’ And boys, of course, are obsessed with it and know all about it before they’ve seen it. Then I realized, I die in the movies. So I feel like it’s kind of a scary thing to show your kid.”
Jimmy quipped, “It’s bad if it scares him; it’s worse if he likes it.”
Yeah, 5 is a bit young to explain the concept of mom dying but not really dying because she’s right next to you watching herself die. But maybe her son would get it. He’s bilingual — French from his father Benjamin Millepied and English from Portman — and after living in Paris he might be sophisticated and jaded enough to shrug it all off. But if he does get scared, there’s no saying it’s because he’s watching his mom die, it may be because he realizes his mom was in the three worst “Star Wars” movies. That’s a tough thing for a kid to process.
