“Your eyes can deceive you. Don’t trust them.” So said Obi-Wan Kenobi when teaching Luke Skywalker the ways of the Force. Now, you have a chance to learn this lesson — and support a good cause — with a special release of classic Star Wars radio dramas and select audiobooks.
Humble Bundle, which offers a collection of items to fans for a pay-what-you-want amount, is teaming up with HighBridge Audio for a Star Wars audiobook bundle, running for two weeks and supporting First Book and UNICEF. The original radio drama version of Star Wars and the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi audiobook will be available for any contribution, while those who pay more than the average will also receive the Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back adaptation and comic book audiobooks Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi — Dark Lords of the Sith and Star Wars: Dark Empire. Customers who pay $15 or more will receive all of the above, plus the Star Wars: Return of the Jedi radio drama and Star Wars: Dark Forces Collector’s Trilogy. As with all Humble Bundles, customers can choose how their purchase dollars are allocated between the publisher and charity.
The Star Wars radio dramas remain fan-favorite ways to experience the stories of a galaxy far, far away. The first adaptation, a recreation of the original Star Wars, was produced for NPR in 1981 with the full cooperation of George Lucas. It featured Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels, and proved so popular that radio versions of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi followed.
“Over the last year, Humble Bundle hosted several recording-breaking Star Wars games and comics promotions,” said Humble Bundle’s director of ebooks, Kelley Allen, “making it quite evident that our customers are ravenous for all things Star Wars. I, myself being a big fan of both the original Star Wars and NPR, couldn’t help but consider these historic audiobooks as a potential Humble Bundle. These recordings also have quite the heritage with a full range of original and very prominent actors. And check out the story about how John Lithgow landed the role of Yoda, you must!”
Whether you’re a longtime fan of Star Wars radio dramas and audiobooks, or are new to the format, this is a great chance to revisit the original trilogy and fan-favorite comics and books in a unique way. Obi-Wan would approve.
