We are officially 100 days out from the worldwide release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Actually, if you live in the UK or France, you’re a day or two closer, as said overseas territories will be getting the film on Thursday the 17th and Wednesday the 16th respectively. It’s no conspiracy, it’s just that different overseas markets open movies on different days, but I digress. There has been plenty of talk about just how big a movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens will end up being at the domestic and worldwide box office. Can it top Jurassic World‘s opening weekend? Can it top $2 billion worldwide? Can it threaten the reign of James Cameron? All of these questions will be answered in 100 days or so. But the most important question is whether or not the movie is any good.
For the overall health of Walt Disney DIS +2.91% new franchise, it is significantly more important that the new film be warmly received by fans and general audiences. If forced to choose, Disney, Lucasfilm, and friends should root for a terrific Star Wars movie that isn’t remotely the biggest movie of all time, as opposed to a lousy Star Wars movie that breaks a bunch of box office records. This is different from the last time in one very specific way. This isn’t just George Lucas’s “three-and-done” trilogy. This is the start of what Disney hopes will be an ongoing series of Star Wars films, with “mythology episodes” and “stand alone episodes” alternating every year.
