As the debate surrounding Star Wars: The Last Jedi rages on, Yoda voice actor Frank Oz has stepped up to defend his character’s role in the polarizing film.

On Twitter, a fan posted a still from his favorite scene in The Last Jedi in which Yoda and Luke watch as the home of the sacred Jedi texts burns. Others chimed in to express their annoyance at what they perceived to be character inconsistency.

This time, Oz — a famed puppeteer and actor — voiced his opinion on the matter, writing, “I kind of have pretty intimate knowledge of who Yoda is, and I don’t feel it was out of character at all.”

The Last Jedi was met with backlash from a portion of the Star Wars fanbase that often complains about how Rian Johnson wrote the film and its use of classic characters. Fans on both sides of the argument often refer to the original trilogy for comparison. Last Jedi detractors insist Yoda was never that eccentric in the originals, while the film’s fans argue that those playful qualities could be found throughout the franchise.

The conflict that stemmed from The Last Jedi seems to be affecting the hype for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX. However, director J.J Abrams has said he hopes the upcoming film, which will conclude the Skywalker saga, will satisfy Star Wars fans. At this point, though, it’s difficult to imagine the fanbase agreeing with one another about the outcome.
