Simon Pegg Says Original Idea For Rey’s Parents Was “undone” By The Last Jedi

“There was some talk about a kind of relevant lineage for her.”

Warning: The following article contains a major spoiler from Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

One of the biggest complaints about Star Wars: The Last Jedi is that the revelation about Rey’s parentage was lacklustre, at best.

Fans understandably got their hopes up since the mysterious identity of Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) long-lost parents was a key theme in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, only for the revelation in Last Jedi that her mum and dad were nobody of consequence to fall flat.

Apparently, a more significant revelation was initially planned. Simon Pegg, who played Jakku junker Unkar Plutt, has told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Force Awakens, and soon Episode IX, director JJ Abrams had originally planned for Rey’s heritage to be obviously more plugged into the Star Wars lore.

“I know what JJ kind of intended, well, at least what was sort of being chucked around,” he explained. “I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by the last one.”

Pegg went on to clarify that there could still be more to Rey’s lineage than we know now: “There was some talk about, you know, a kind of relevant lineage for her. But I honestly don’t know, and I don’t know if anybody knows. We shall see.”

His comments echo those of long-time Star Wars composer John Williams that the not-so-shocking revelation about Rey’s lineage in The Last Jedi was just smoke and mirrors.

“Rey’s parents might be identified to us in the next film,” he recently told KUSC radio. “I don’t believe [The Last Jedi revelation] either.”

Daisy Ridley has previously admitted to becoming emotional when she was originally told of Rey’s fate in Episode IX, before original director Colin Trevorrow was replaced by Abrams.

Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to arrive in UK cinemas on Thursday, December 19, 2019 and then reach the US the following day on Friday, December 20, 2019.
