Virtual reality (VR) technology can be used to put players and audiences in their favourite movies for the first time, but what about directing them? That’s what ScenePlay, a new VR experience from dSky, will allow fans to do. Today the team is releasing its first look at the software, which grants players control of a famous scene from one of the most popular movies of all time; Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The software uses the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) to allow players to step inside the movie and even direct it.

The scene in question is set in iconic Jedi Obi Wan Kenobi’s hut on the desert planet of Tatooine. Here, Kenobi and the then-young Luke Skywalker view a distress call from Princess Leia with the help of the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. ScenePlay will allow players to step inside this scene, reciting the lines of Luke, Obi Wan or Leia and even taking charge as the director of the scene, just as George Lucas himself did when filming the sci-fi classic. As Luke, players will even be able to use a Razer Hydra motion controller to wield a lightsaber.

The free version of these experience can currently be downloaded from WEARVR for both Windows and Mac. The piece is described by dSky as a ‘proof-of-concept’ for interactive cinema. Those interested in the company’s work can head to an official website to view more of its work and sign up for a beta program. The site also states that, along with the Oculus Rift, the developer is also working on bringing its software to both the HTC Vive on PC and Project Morpheus HMD for PlayStation 4, though there isn’t any word on when we might see work for these kits.
