Via Collider.com:
When Collider’s Steve Weintraub spoke to J.J. Abrams at the junket for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Abrams said they had about dozen full deleted scenes, and that about ten to twenty minutes would end up on the Blu-ray. However, the Blu-ray was released last week with nowhere near that amount (it’s closer to five minutes of very brief scenes, and there’s no commentary on why those scenes were cut), so Steve decided to follow up with Abrams (who was walking the red carpet with Simon Pegg) at CinemaCon.
When asked if there are any more deleted scenes on the way, Abrams replied:
J.J. ABRAMS: I think there are going to be some more that are going to be available online, but I don’t know when that’s going to happen. But there are some others.
SIMON PEGG: Most of them feature me, funnily enough. There’s a whole story featuring Unkar. Like him opening his shop—
ABRAMS: There is, actually.
Did Disney say “We’re going to have an ultimate box set and we want to save five minutes for that box set after Episode 9?”
ABRAMS: No, Disney’s been amazing. There’s been no nefarious or weird, “Let’s hold things back for the fans,” but there will be other deleted scenes that will be available for those who wish to see them.
I would beg to differ on that. While it may not be “nefarious”, certain special features were held back for certain retailers (for example, you can only get some extras if you buy at the Blu-ray at Target) and we all know that there will be some super-duper box set at the end of the trilogy because that’s how studios operate. If you love the movie and don’t mind double-dipping that’s fine, but I will be in no way shocked when that box set is announced with “never before seen deleted scenes”.
In case you missed it, here’s a brief look at a deleted scene featuring Kylo Ren, and here are images from other deleted scenes.
