Sideshow Charity Auctions to benefit LUX Junior Development Cycling Team

Sideshow has been dedicated to supporting charities for many years, most notably the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the Mike Nosco Foundation. We’ve raised money via auctions for seriously ill kids who were looking for a bright moment in their otherwise difficult situation.

More recently, we’ve attempted to focus on smaller groups that serve our local community but often struggle with their fundraising. One of the unsung groups that has done amazing work in our community is the LUX Junior Development Cycling Team, a nationally recognized bike racing team for exceptional riders under 18 years old.  The LUX mission is to support and educate gifted young bike riders in the Southern California area by providing guidance on and off the bike.  Some of these kids are among the most elite bike racers in the nation and already race on an international level.

Early Look – Youtini – A Star Wars Book Box

Youtini is the first ever STAR WARS book subscription box! Every month they will ship STAR WARS books right to your doorstep – Canon AND Legends material – along with official STAR WARS merchandise & Youtini-branded gear.

They are currently in a Prelaunch stage with an official product launch on December 22, 2017. At that time, they will begin taking paid subscribers and announce our official product lineup. The first shipments will go out in late January or early February. Part of that decision is dependent on the book release schedule that is currently planned for announcement following The Last Jedi premiere.

The current plan is to offer 3 different products at launch offered on a monthly basis:

The Youtini Box priced in the $35-40 range which includes:

  • The most recent STAR WARS Canon novel released within the last 30 days
  • A STAR WARS Legends novel that fits our theme and perfectly pairs with the previously mentioned Canon book
  • A curated guide outlining how each book fits into the big picture and STAR WARS timeline, backstories to the books, and our reasoning behind choosing them for this month’s box
  • Personally-selected STAR WARS merchandise
  • Specialty and limited edition Youtini branded gear

The Youtini Bag priced in the $18-25 range: Either Canon or Legends Edition which includes:

  • Either the same Canon or Legends book we send in the Youtini Box that month
  • The same guided reading guide materials and low scale Youtini-branded merchandise.

The product offering may changed based on customer demand during the Prelaunch series. They are very open to ideas. Following Launch, we will begin exploring other product offerings including graphic novels, comics, toys, and other collectibles.

Products and pricing are subject to change and they are open to customer feedback, so let us know if you have any suggestions and we will share them, or check them out at the links below:

13 GREAT NON-JEDI STAR WARS HEROES

Via Starwars.com:
YOU DON’T NEED THE FORCE TO HELP TAKE DOWN THE EMPIRE.

Everybody knows being a Jedi is the coolest job ever. You get to travel all over the galaxy, you can move objects — and control people — with your mind, and, oh yeah, you get a lightsaber. The Jedi are the defenders of justice across the entire universe, but even they can’t fight an Empire on their own. In Rogue One, we were exposed to a uniquely different Star Wars film — not one Jedi so much as makes a cameo (there’s a Sith Lord, but no Jedi). Even without the help of a Force-wielder, the crew of Rogue One manages to storm Scarif and get the Death Star plans into the hands of the Rebel Alliance, thus kickstarting a sequence of events that leads to the downfall of the Empire. And they did so without the help of a single lightsaber.

In the spirit of the heroes of Rogue One, let’s take a look at 13 characters who held their own in the galactic struggle for peace, all without the use of the Force.

Book Review: Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel

Review via Yodasnews Contributor Jacob Burdis:

 (Spoiler Free)

With the new Star Wars anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story just around the corner, excitement and anticipation levels are at an all-time high in the Star Wars community. Catalyst was released exactly one month before the movie premier to build on the excitement and anticipation, and give some of the backstory of Rogue One’s main characters Jyn Erso, Orson Krennic, and Saw Gerrera. The book is mostly supplemental and not essential to read to enjoy the film, and since it was published in advance it is mostly spoiler-free.

Catalyst was written by James Luceno, who also wrote the novel Tarkin. I read all of the Star Wars Canon literature in chronological order before watching Episode VII, and Tarkin was among my favorite of the novels. I actually just finished it a second time in my preparations for Rogue One. Luceno is a fantastic author who expertly helps readers dive deep into understanding the key characters. I believe it was this ability that led to him being chosen to write Catalyst. To be frank, the storyline is somewhat bland, and the “I just couldn’t put it down” factor is almost non-existent; so if you are looking for an action-packed novel with light-sabers, dog-fights and epic battles you will be disappointed. But if you are looking to gain a better understanding of the backstory and context of the characters, you will be richly rewarded.

The book centers mainly on two characters: Galen Erso and Orson Krennic. Galen is a brilliant scientist who is determined to harness the power of crystals, including kyber crystals (the same ones that power jedi lightsabers) to create a renewable energy source. His vision is to improve the lives of people on countless underprivileged worlds throughout the galaxy. He is adamantly opposed to weaponizing his research. Krennic is a smart, strategically-minded official in the government (the Republic and later the Galactic Empire) who is one of very few assigned to work on Palpatine’s top-secret mobile battlestation. His specific assignment becomes leading the Special Weapons Group in charge of developing the super laser for the station. His primary motivation is to do whatever is necessary to elevate his status in the eyes of the emperor and move up the chain of command. Oh, and did I mention that Erso and Krennic are actually old friends who studied together in a program for the gifted individuals in the republic?

The story follows Galen, his adventurous wife Lyra and their young daughter Jyn as their lives are whipped around by the subtle and covert manipulations of Krennic as he strives to corner Galen into contributing to the development of the super laser. In addition to the Ersos and Krennic, we get a glimpse into Tarkin and Krennic’s rivalry, and we also learn how Saw Gerrera becomes a close friend to the Ersos.

Overall, this is a very well-written novel that does a phenomenal job at diving deeper into the context and backstory that I believe will greatly enhance my enjoyment of Rogue One. However, in my opinion this novel is a step lower than the other novels I’ve read recently because it doesn’t stand on it’s own. The novel is relatively slow, uneventful and lacks the suspense and plot twists necessary to pull me in as a reader. I anticipate it will be a great companion to Rogue One and it has done its job in getting me even more excited for the film, but it’s probably not one I will pick up and read again.

That being said, I recommend Catalyst for all Star Wars fans, especially as a step in preparing for the Rogue One Anthology Film (read more about how I recommend preparing for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).

Hayden Christensen Reveals Why He Quit Acting After Playing Anakin Skywalker

Via Independent.co.uk:

Hayden Christensen, known to many as Anakin Skywalker, has revealed why he quit Hollywood after finding global fame in the Star Wars prequels.

The 34-year-old was just 19 when George Lucas cast him in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and the sudden worldwide attention left him feeling like a fraud. He packed it all in and went to live on a farm.

“I felt like I had this great thing in Star Wars that provided all these opportunities and gave me a career, but it all kind of felt a little too handed to me,” he told the LA Times. “I didn’t want to go through life feeling like I was just riding a wave.”

Christensen’s first film in five years, 90 Minutes in Heaven, was released in September to scathing reviews but he insists he is happy keeping a lower profile.

“You can’t take years off and not have it affect your career,” he said. “But I don’t know – in a weird, sort of destructive way there was something appealing about that to me.

“There was something in the back of my head that was like, ‘If this time away is gonna be damaging to my career, then so be it. If I can come back afterwards and claw my way back in then maybe I’ll feel like I earned it.”

There was talk of Christensen briefly appearing in the new Star Wars movie The Force Awakens in a vision showing his battle with the dark and light side, but ultimately it was Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan that spoke to Rey.

Star Wars 8 arrives in 2017, which the screenwriter has promised will be “weird”.
