Star Wars: The Force Awakens Early Concept Art Of Kylo Ren

Via Moviepilot.com:

Even several months after the box office destroying release of Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens we’re still finding out bits and pieces about the film, from possible deleted scenes featured on the upcoming April 5 DVD release to snippets looking forward to Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Industrial Light & Magic, the George Lucas founded visual effects company who have been the powerhouse behind the Star Wars films, recently released a bunch of new concept art images from The Force Awakens off the back of the visual book, The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The collection of gorgeous images encompasses bits and pieces spanning the entirety of the film, from an alternate look at Luke (Skywalker) to a captured figure (an early take on Poe Dameron perhaps?) in what appears to be Jedi robes in the vein of Obi-Wan.

Rick Carter, co-production designer, Star Wars: The Force Awakens commented on the creation process, explaining that the early designs were intended to reflect the storytelling concepts rather than function as explict representations of what the final design would be:

“Each artist began to explore his individual response, and collectively, we began to answer, with our words and art. Out of our brainstorming sessions emerged visual imagery of where we might want to go and what it would look like when we got there. We were not merely illustrating scenes that already existed: we were initiating storytelling concepts through the visual images themselves.”

Whilst we do get to see various figures from The Force Awakens in the concept art there’s one who stands above and beyond (and not just cause he’s hella tall) we speak of course of Kylo Ren (portrayed in the film by Adam Driver).

The early concept art shows us an interesting take on the former Ben Solo, one which more closely alines his character conceptually with that of his grandfather – Darth Vader.

Check out the early helmet designs which blend elements of Vader with those of Darth Revan.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Concept Art Reveals How Different It Nearly Was

Via Independent.co.uk:

Legendary visual effects company ILM has released a whole host of pre-preproduction images for the film

Industrial Light & Magic, or ILM, has revealed a huge amount of concept art created for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Posted on their official site, the pieces reveal points from across the film’s development; from recognisable renditions of Kylo Ren and the desert planet of Jakku, to early pieces which reveal how radically different the film so easily could have been.

“Each artist began to explore his individual response, and collectively, we began to answer, with our words and art,” explains co-production designer Rick Carter. “Out of our brainstorming sessions emerged visual imagery of where we might want to go and what it would look like when we got there. We were not merely illustrating scenes that already existed: we were initiating storytelling concepts through the visual images themselves.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens: 7 Deleted Scenes To Be Released On DVD and Blu-Ray, Editors Confirm

Via Independent.co.uk:

With the DVD and Blu-Ray release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens drawing ever closer, more and more fans are wondering whether they will feature deleted scenes.

Luckily, the film’s editors, Mary Jo Markey and Maryann Brandon, were able to confirm to The Independent that seven scenes will be made available by Disney.

“We have been talking about [the deleted scenes],” Brandon began. “But Disney has mentioned to us that – since they’re going to be on the DVD treats for viewers – that we should stop talking about them.”

When pressed a little further, the Oscar-nominee said: “There aren’t a lot. There’s one with Harrison Ford, there’s one with Rey, but there aren’t a lot.

“I think there are maybe seven or eight,” added Markey. “I don’t know if that’s a lot. I remember looking at the reel. Actually, I think there are seven.”

Speaking about whether there was anything they regret leaving on the cutting room floor, Brandon said: “I honestly think that what is in the film is exactly what needs to be in the film, and what isn’t remains fun but not necessary.

“JJ [Abrams, director] really wanted it to be a two-hour movie, and we did strive to do that. But then, at a certain point, we felt like the film is really working for the very few people that we were able to show it to.

“So we went back to see if we should add any of the things we left off, and there really wasn’t anything that felt like it needed to be in the film. That’s always the goal, to get it down to its essence. There were fun things, but it didn’t actually have to be in the movie for it to work.”

As well as talking about deleted scenes, Brandon and Markey – who are both up for Oscars for there work on Star Wars – also spoke about the film’s similarities to George Lucas’s films, diversity in the film industry and working with JJ Abrams.

Star Wars The Force Awakens Originally Had A Different Ending

Via Inquisitr.com:
Warning: The following article is filled with SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. If you’ve not seen the blockbuster then you probably shouldn’t read ahead.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ final shot was one of the crowning achievements of J.J. Abrams’ hugely popular blockbuster.
The final sequence saw Daisy Ridley’s Rey and Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker stand on a secluded island, with the actress handing out Luke’s lightsaber to the seldom seen Jedi.

But Ben Rosenblatt, the co-producer of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has now opened up about how the film was made, revealing that the final shot was almost completely different.

Rosenblatt made this admission during a Hollywood technical retreat, via the Hollywood Reporter, as he confessed that J.J. Abrams was undecided about the final shot, which was shot from a helicopter and looked down on both Rey and Luke.

Rosenblatt explained that Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ ending took a while, and was a point of contention, for J.J. Abrams and the entire creative team. That’s because the other option that J.J. Abrams was considering for the ending of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was simply a close-up of Rey.

However, J.J. Abrams finally decided to go with the helicopter shot because of John Williams’ epic score and music, with Rosenblatt explaining that it “left you with this sweeping emotional epic [feel] and you’re going to see a lot of that in Episode VIII.”

Ben Rosenblatt also spoke about what influenced J.J. Abrams as he considered the look and visual style of The Force Awakens, admitting that it was a combination of J.J. Abrams’ own approach and George Lucas.

“Both,” Rosenblatt admitted to the crowd at the Hollywood Professional Association Tech Retreat, which has been held in Palm Springs over the last few days. “It was J.J., but J.J. was honoring George’s original vision… But J.J. brought his own visual language to the film.”
While Star Wars: The Force Awakens was met with stunning reviews and has had a stupendous run at the box office, there were some fans who believed that it was a little bit too similar to the plot and story of George Lucas’ original trilogy.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, via Entertainment Weekly, at the start of January, J.J. Abrams addressed these concerns, insisting that this was intentional, as he wanted The Force Awakens to acknowledge the past of the franchise, but at the same time still move forward towards its future.
