DAVE FILONI ON STAR WARS REBELS SEASON TWO

Via Starwars.com:

THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER DISCUSSES THE MAKING OF SEASON TWO’S CLASSIC FINALE.

In the final installment of our recap interview on Star Wars Rebels Season Two (and in case you missed it, you can check out part one here), executive producer Dave Filoni and StarWars.com discuss the memorable season finale, including Sith Temple design, the return of a certain Zabrak, and a duel that was years in the making.

StarWars.com: I want to start off with Malachor itself and how you came to develop the look of it, from the bodies on the ground to the look of the Temple.

Dave Filoni: I liked the idea of the episode occurring on a graveyard planet. As Simon Kinberg and I developed the story, I started thinking about Sith Temples and how this one might be underground in a massive cavern. That would allow us to poke holes in the ceiling so beams of light could stream down into the Temple. When the characters are above ground, it’s daylight and they’re looking down at a black surface. When they are below, it’s nighttime and they’re looking up at what seem to be stars. The design elements were important to reinforce the concepts of night and day, light and dark, life and death. Those things are part of Malachor’s DNA and its architecture.

Will Darth Vader or Inquisitors Appear in ‘Star Wars Rebels’ Season 3?

Via Slashfilm.com:
The trailer for Star Wars Rebels Season 3 premiered at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016, revealing a new villain for our heroes. But with Grand Admiral Thrawn resurrected from Legends back into Star Wars canon, what does this mean for Darth Vader and his Inquisitors? Will we see the Jedi-turned-Sith leader or his Force-empowered Jedi hunter team of Inquisitors in the third season of the acclaimed Disney XD series? Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni answers these questions, after the jump.
Will We See Darth Vader in Star Wars Rebels Season 3?
I had a chance to ask Star Wars Rebels creator/producer Dave Filoni if we will see Darth Vader in Star Wars Rebels Season 3, here is what he said:

You know, I’ve kind of gone on this course, which is pretty, pretty direct about certain things ’cause I don’t like to tease people along and then have them be disappointed. So it’s really an elected decision to not have Vader around because, as we get closer to A New Hope, I want him to serve as that story.

Filoni explained that he doesn’t want to “take up too much of Vader’s time.”

I know it sounds funny. I don’t wanna fill in every hole. I don’t know what we benefit from that. As much as you need to say, okay, this is a major point in his life when he’s confronted by his former apprentice. That is worth doing. Him chasing the rebels of the Ghost crew around is never something that really interested me. Mainly because I didn’t think they could survive it for very long. And now that I have Thrawn, it’s more interesting to me to setup this completely different kind of villain that’s gonna play a long game against our guys that they’re not typically used to.

“STAR WARS REBELS” SEASON 3 PREMIERES SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24

THE REBELS FACE GRAND ADMIRAL THRAWN WHEN “STAR WARS REBELS” SEASON 3 PREMIERES

The critically-acclaimed animated series “Star Wars Rebels” returns SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 (8:30 p.m., ET) and introduces new characters Grand Admiral Thrawn and Bendu during the season three one-hour premiere event, “Steps into Shadow” on Disney XD.

Having established a secret base on Atollon, the Ghost crew, now led by a more powerful Ezra, strengthens the rebel fleet by acquiring new resources and recruits eager to stand against the Empire. However, the Imperial efforts to eliminate the rebellion are now being led by the coldly analytical Grand Admiral Thrawn, whose strategic, tactical and cultural insights make him a threat unlike any they have faced before. In season three, Ezra and Sabine take on new roles and challenges as the rebels prepare for their biggest mission yet – a direct assault on the Empire.

Will ‘Star Wars Rebels’ Get X-Wings?

Via Slashfilm.com:
Star Wars Rebels follows the Rebellion in the five years before Star Wars: A New Hope, but we’ve yet to see an X-Wing appear onscreen. So one of the first questions I asked Filoni is when we’ll finally see some X-Wings in Star Wars Rebels. Find out what he said about Star Wars Rebels X-Wings, after the jump.
By my calculation, we’re about two or three years away from A New Hope on the Star Wars timeline and we’ve yet to see a squadron of X-Wing fighters in the rebellion. Last season we got that fantastic episode that gave us the origin of the B-Wing. And the upcoming third season will feature Y-Wings. But when will the rebellion get their hands on some X-Wing fighters?

Everybody wants X-Wings, you know. It’s a tricky thing in Star Wars because now we have so many things going on across so many platforms. That, you know, when you’re creating a show and you’re able to create, you know, stories in Star Wars, I try to see well how can we make this different? So one of the choices that we made early on was that we weren’t gonna have X-Wings at least early on in the show. We’ve done B-Wings. Now we’re doing Y-Wings. But I’ve tried to stay away from a lot of the original trilogy kind of New Hope backbone stuff, because that, I want that to be clearly this is not that story. We’re a different cell.

So does that mean we’ll never see X-Wings in Star Wars Rebels? Not so quick — Filoni has already had discussions with Lucasfilm story group head Kiri Hart about how they will be introduced, and it seems more of a matter of when.

If and when X-Wings do show up it’ll probably be awesome. Kiri Hart and I always talk about Empire of the Sun. We love the movie Empire of the Sun. And to me the X-Wing moment, this is probably a giveaway, will be like the Cadillac in the sky moment when the P-51s come to the camp where the kid is. It has to have that kind of feeling behind it. That you’re so excited to see these things. Then they have value again. As opposed to just saying, oh look there’s an X-Wing. You know, I want them to appear in a moment of oh my gosh, I’ve been waiting for this.

Sounds like a pretty cool take.

Star Wars Rebels Season 3 will premiere in fall 2016.
