Star Wars Parody Poster

Movie poster designer extraordinaire Olly Gibbs was in the middle of making lasagna when the official poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was revealed to the world on Twitter.

From the time he saw it to the time he finished his own parody mockup, he had not only finished making his dinner, but he also unknowingly created the next viral Star Wars sensation.

When asked by Polygon why he decided to go with an all-Jar Jar Binks reimagining of the poster, Gibbs confided that he had a little bit of love in his heart for one of the franchise’s most controversial characters.

“I find your lack of faith in the Binks disturbing,” he said via email when prodded on the decision. “My first Star Wars film I ever saw in cinemas was Episode I so I’ve got a little soft spot for the little guy.”

Gibbs, who’s designed posters for a variety of artists and whose work is consistently used in Empire Magazine, has a history of creating parody posters for a variety of films and television shows, but said he never expected the Jar Jar Binks one to take off as fast and as well as it did.

“They tend to just begin as silly ideas that I can’t resist creating,” Gibbs said. “It was a nice surprise to see so many other people appreciate who appreciate Binks, he deserves a bit of love.”

Dance your helmet off

In this sleek new video, Infectious Designer mashed up Star Wars and Daft Punk — and appropriately titled it, “Darth Punk: The Funk Awakens.”

In the clip, Darth Vader and Boba Fett get EDM makeovers with glittering helmets ready to reflect the lights at Electric Daisy Carnival. They stalk the streets looking for their prey, eventually facing off with a black-clad street tough who shows no fear — even when they pull out their ultimate Wampa Stompa Mix (on cassette) and prepare their dance battle droid.

The video is filled with light sabers and a dance-floor ready soundtrack for those who want to unleash the funk and The Force on the dance floor.

‘Star Wars Bands’, Parody Album Covers

Mark Hamill is more than happy to ruin your Star Wars

Mark Hamill has been signing Star Wars junk for well over 35 years, so it’s no surprise that Luke Skywalker himself has to get a little creative with his autographs. Hamill also appears to give zero fucks about your mint conditionStar Wars bubblegum cards. Building And Crashing A Podracer

Podracing in Star Wars: Episode I looks cool but, let’s face facts, there is no way that kind of contraption could function in real life, right? No more than a Thunderhawk from M.A.S.K. with a dozen bottle rockets strapped to it should drive in a straight line (I speak from personal experience.)

Though humankind currently lacks the technology (and poor decision-making) necessary to build a podracer in real life, there is an environment where we can have an accurate look at how challenging and dangerous it is: Kerbal Space Program, whose demanding physics engine supplies a lot of the comedy, intentional and otherwise, in the space exploration simulator.

While nonstop demolition derby comedy is always fun to watch (especially set to a jaunty orchestral score), that’s not really the payoff to this video. Watch as Joey Gil, despite repeated, humiliating, frustrating failure and destruction, actually gets a vehicle to work. Behold, the Jar-Jar Mark V (at 9 minutes of this video).

It’s legitimately inspiring to see Gil’s podracer fly beautifully for 7 minutes, 56 seconds, airfoils fanning out gracefully to slow down at the end. That’s discovery! That’s science! That’s awesome. I need a tissue.

The podracer was built for an ongoing Kerbal Space Program challenge of competing antigravity racers. “I’m the only one to build a triple hull (with triple the drag) along with a very unstable cable connection,” Gil says.

But he’s not stopping there. He’s back working on a Jar-Jar Mark VIII “supersonic” that’s apparently so fast parts start flaking off of it. Godspeed!
