In Rogue One, that also happens to be something the characters from a galaxy far, far away have to face.
The film’s Rebel squad, who are on a mission to steal the Death Star plans, is partly made of individuals who once served the Empire. Riz Ahmed’s volatile pilot Bodhi Rook is one of them, a former Imperial transport operator. Another isn’t a person at all — the imposing security droid K-2SO, played via performance-capture by Alan Tudyk.
In the video above, we walk through Kaytoo’s origin, and the intriguing premise that a machine built to serve the galactic dictatorship could have its programming altered to see its past through a new moral lense.
The droid, after all, was just following orders. But in humanity, there is no weaker excuse for having committed — or been a bystander to — terrible atrocities.
Kaytoo wants redemption. The choice to seek it is a testament to his humanity, even if there’s nothing human about him.
