Rogue One: A Star Wars Story To Hit UK Cinemas Early

Via Radiotimes.com:

American Star Wars fans will be glaring jealously across the Atlantic as, yet again, the UK gets to see a new Star Wars movie before it opens in the USA.
That’s right – Rogue One: a Star Wars Story will officially be released in the UK on 15 December, a full day earlier than its US premiere.

The UK was also treated to an early opening for Star Wars: The Force Awakens back in December 2015. Sorry, America.
As they release the first of three standalone Star Wars anthology movies, Disney and LucasFilm execs will be watching anxiously to see if Rogue One can match the success of The Force Awakens, which smashed box office records around the world.

The film, which follows a group of Rebels on their mission to steal the blueprints to the Death Star, is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.

THE STATE OF THE EMPIRE AND THE JEDI IN ROGUE ONE

Via Ign.com:

When it hits theaters this December, Rogue One will have the distinction of being the first Star Wars movie to explore the period in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. If you haven’t been following the TV series Star Wars: Rebels or books like Star Wars: A New Dawn and Star Wars: Tarkin, you may not know much about this pivotal piece of the Star Wars timeline.

To help get you primed for the new movie, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about the setting of Rogue One and how Emperor Palpatine rewrote history to make the galaxy forget all about the Jedi.

Lego’s New Krennic Imperial Shuttle Set Drops Hints About ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’

Via Dailydot.com:

The first and totally understandable question you might have when diving into the new Krennic Imperial Shuttle Lego set from the upcoming Star Wars: Rogue One movie is, who or what the heck is a “Krennic?”

A picture at the bottom of the box provides a clue. Krennic is indeed a “he”—or more specifically, the white-cape-wearing Director Krennic. Some judicious Googling turns up more information.

Orson Krennic, played by Ben Mendelsohn in the movie, is the director of advanced weapons research for the Imperial military. In a nutshell, he’s the guy responsible for building the Death Star.

Such a notorious figure in fictional history should have a suitably nefarious-looking ride, which is where his Imperial Shuttle comes in.

Krennic’s ship borrows design elements from previous Star Wars films, looking like a hybrid of the Emperor’s shuttle from Return of the Jedi and Kylo Ren’s ominous transport in The Force Awakens.

Krennic’s shuttle is topped by a shark-like fin, and its wings fold down like the Emperor’s shuttle, but its black color exudes the same bad-ass vibe as Ren’s.

Details of Star Wars movie plot points are generally closely guarded secrets, which is what makes the release of new Lego sets before the associated film so interesting. Lego has a habit of spoiling such information—see the inclusion of a Giant-Man figure in a Marvel set ahead of this summer’s Captain America: Civil War.

The Actor Behind The Next ‘Star Wars’ Robot Acted On Stilts For The Entire Movie

Via Businessinsider.com:

From R2-D2 to C-3PO to BB-8, “Star Wars” has created some of the galaxy’s most beloved robots.

For the upcoming “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” there’s a new robot for fans to fall in love with.

Actor Alan Tudyk, best known for his role as Wash in the cult favorite TV series “Firefly,” will play K-2SO, the franchise’s latest lovable droid. K-2SO is an imperial droid reprogrammed by Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) so he can fight alongside the Empire.

This isn’t Tudyk’s first time playing a bot. He previously one in 2004’s “I, Robot.” However, K-2SO presented Tudyk with a unique challenge: he’s a tall, lanky machine. During a panel at New York Comic Con, Tudyk discussed how instead of wearing a robotic suit, Tudyk wore a motion-capture suit while performing on stilts to bring the character to life. The details of the character were later filled in on a computer.

“They [the stilts] were a foot high because the character’s very tall and lanky,” Tudyk told the crowd. “There were times I had to run and…I stood on a cliff. You could see it in one of the teasers.”

It added yet another challenge to what looks like a fairly physical performance.

It’s why he towers over his co-stars Felicity Jones and Diego Luna.

No behind-the-scenes photos have been released of Tudyk yet. We very much look forward to that day.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will be out in theaters on December 16, 2016.

New ‘Rogue One’ Trailer Hints at Another Star Wars Epic

Via NYtimes.com:

“We have hope. Rebellions are built on hope.”

With one line in the new trailer for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which debuted Thursday morning, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) practically sums up the entire “Star Wars” franchise. That’s fitting, since the new movie is a stand-alone story bridging the gap between the third and fourth chapters of the saga. Or, counting by production order, the sixth and the first.

“Rogue One” tells the story of a group of rebels who try to steal the plans for that sci-fi weapon of mass destruction, the Death Star. So it’s obviously rooted in that larger space opera, and the trailer establishes that in some superficial ways. The musical motifs of John Williams’s score are instantly recognizable. Plus, there’s a small spacecraft gliding across the sky, and it takes less than 30 seconds before a stormtrooper shows up.

The reminders go deeper than that, too. Early in the trailer, Jyn’s father, played by the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, tells his daughter that everything he does is for her protection. As it turns out, one of those things might be building the Death Star. And with that information, “Rogue One” is positioned as the story of a father and a child, much like the seven movies before it. The formula here appears to be slightly tweaked: younger characters in past films have always been sons (Luke Skywalker, Kylo Ren) or surrogate sons (Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi), not daughters. Centering the film on Jyn would seem to put the movie in line with the last entry in the canon, “The Force Awakens,” which flipped the “Star Wars” script by putting a female character at its center.

Beyond that, the trailer offers many hints at the movie’s scale. There are numerous explosions and blaster battles, a cast of characters mixing the familiar and unfamiliar, and, going by appearances, a few planets in the background. As the action picks up and the music rises, the trailer makes everything about the film feel epic.

But then again, what “Star Wars” movie doesn’t?

Your New Favorite ‘Star Wars’ Character Is A Droid

Via Cnbc.com:

Step aside R2-D2 and BB-8, there’s a new droid in town — and he’s coming for your toy sales.

K-2SO (Kay-Tuesso), a reprogrammed Imperial droid now fighting for the rebels in Disney’s new “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” is flying off the shelves.
“K-2SO seems to be head and shoulders, literally, above everyone else in terms of popularity,” Steve Evans, design director for Hasbro’s Star Wars line, said during a panel at New York Comic Con in early October.

Versions of the droid appear in several of Hasbro’s “Star Wars” lines, including a Black Series collector toy that sells for about $26.99 at retail.

“Following in the footsteps of R2-D2 and BB-8, we expect K-2SO to be a new favorite among fans,” Hasbro told CNBC. “Droids play an important role in the Star Wars universe and it is our goal to create toys that allow fans to feel like they are immersed in the story themselves.”

Dave Filoni Talks Rebels And Rogue One Connections

Via Empireonline.com:

Star Wars Rebels, which has kicked off its third season, is a series in evolution, both in terms of its characters and a scenario that is growing increasingly more complex as it goes on. It’s a precedent set by the last animated series, Clone Wars, based on the creative desire to have the show grow up with its audience.

Of season three, Lucasfilm describes the set-up as follows: “Having established a secret base on Atollon, the Ghost crew, now led by a more powerful Ezra, strengthens the rebel fleet by acquiring new resources and recruits eager to stand against the Empire. However, the Imperial efforts to eliminate the rebellion are now being led by the coldly analytic Grand Admiral Thrawn, whose strategic, tactical and cultural insights make him a threat unlike any they have faced before.”

In the following exclusive interview, executive producer/director Dave Filoni reflects on the events of last year and previews season three, including the introduction of Thrawn and the ways that the show could connect to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
