Star Wars: Rogue One – New Banners
Via Screenrant.com:
For almost forty years, George Lucas’ science fiction-fantasy epic Star Wars has followed the Skywalker family and their ongoing struggles with the dark (Sith) and light (Jedi) side of the Force. Underneath all the Skywalker family drama, Star Wars is ultimately about a galaxy ruled by two opposing political factions, the Empire and the Republic.
When we first meet our original heroes in 1977’s A New Hope, the Galactic Empire controlled by the Sith is in power, but they are soon overthrown thanks to some spies for the Rebel Alliance who have stolen plans to the Empire’s new weapon the Death Star. The plans allow Luke and his friends to destroy the Death Star and defeat Sith Lord Darth Vader, and these very important rebels are the focus of Star Wars‘ first spinoff film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Taking place shortly before the events of the original Star Wars trilogy, this year’s Rogue One is led by Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso who, alongside Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) and a handful of others, is sent on a dangerous mission on behalf of the Rebel Alliance. Along the way, they’ll come across obstacles like the Empire’s Stormtroopers, which are depicted below in a newly released banner of them fighting against the Rebels on the beaches of Scarif, with the Death Star looming in the background.
A lot of noise has been made about how Rogue One will be Star Wars‘ first true war movie, and this new banner continues that trend. Most of the film’s posters so far have shown this same battle on Scarif, where its not only possible but highly likely that some of our heroes will die for the greater good. Forest Whitaker, Donnie Yen and Ben Mendelsohn also star in the movie as Saw Gerrera, Chirrut Îmwe and Orson Krennic, respectively, and they’ll also have important parts to play in retrieving the plans for the Death Star, whether for good or bad.
While we already know that Rogue One ends with the Death Star plans making it out to the Rebel Alliance, the story of how they get there has never been told. It’s a very important part of Star Wars lore, as it influences everything that happens afterward, but we can also assume it came with great cost. The animated series Star Wars Rebels has already shown us there’s much to be learned about that time after the Empire took over, just as there’s more to learn about how loyalties were tested and people sacrificed their lives to create the New Republic in The Force Awakens.

Will Star Wars: Rogue One Feature the Text Crawl?
Via Screenrant.com:
Part of Disney’s master plan to annualize Star Wars is releasing standalone anthology films in the years between the numbered episodes of the Skywalker family saga. This initiative begins with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which details the Rebel Alliance’s dangerous mission to steal the original Death Star plans. A key selling point of these spinoffs is the fact that they can blend multiple genres and bring in some fresh perspectives for the franchise. For instance, Rogue One has long been established as a gritty war drama in space, while Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s young Han Solo film is going to break some rules in its own right.
Fans of the galaxy far, far away are no doubt excited to see their favorite universe fleshed out in (hopefully) exciting ways, but Lucasfilm also has to market these projects to casual audiences, some of whom may be unaware how an anthology movie is different from an episode. Despite there being three trailers online, certain viewers still don’t know where in the timeline Rogue One fits, so Lucasfilm has to do everything they can to separate their two main series of films in an effort to make things as clear as possible. There’s been much discussion about whether or not Rogue One will include a text crawl at the beginning, and all signs are pointing to “no” right now.
Star Wars News Net is hearing from a source of theirs that Rogue One will open “way different than the classic Star Wars films.” This is just the latest piece of evidence that the movie will not feature an opening crawl, which of course was the standard practice for the previous seven installments. While this will be disappointing for some who enjoy hearing the classic fanfare and watching the famous yellow text fly up the screen, it does make a great deal of sense for the studio. Given that any Star Wars film is going to be a big-budget blockbuster, eliminating the crawl is perhaps the easiest way to let moviegoers know that this is a new kind of Star Wars movie with little connections to the main storyline.
As for how Rogue One director Gareth Edwards plans to mix up the approach remains to be seen. Much of Star Wars media typically starts with some kind of context for the main narrative; episodes of The Clone Wars series began with old fashioned news reels that filled viewers in, whereas the novels kick things off with three paragraphs to ease readers in. Those two would be viable options for Rogue One, so it will interesting to see what Edwards and his team ultimately decided on. Additionally, many will be curious to learn if the film’s opening will set a template that future spinoffs will follow or if each one can be unique.
No doubt, some longtime fans are going to be upset by the news, since opening text crawls have been part of Star Wars‘ DNA since 1977. However, it’s more important for Rogue One‘s actual plot to offer a rewarding experience, as opposed to the film sticking to long-established tropes for the sake of familiarity. As long as the movie is considered good by fans and/or critics, few will ultimately care that the spinoff was the first live-action entry to bypass the opening crawl. If the whole point of the standalones is to show that the galaxy is bigger than the story of a single family, then they should be able to do their own thing.
Star Wars: Rogue One Is Gonna Be SO Gritty
Via Gamesradar.com:
The realism of a Star Wars movie is…. not a sentence that anyone should write, ever. Well, like it or not, the beloved franchise continues to evolve from its sci-fi fantasy beginnings into something with a more grounded feel in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Gareth Edwards made it clear from the start this prequel spin-off is a proper war movie. Forget gloss. It’ll be a grimy, gritty look at galactic conflict.
Actor Diego Luna has now confirmed that he approached his role in very much the same way. “I wanted to make my character more natural and realistic,” he tells Mexican Vanity Fair, “Although people expect the tone of the film to be fantasy, it actually is quite the contrary. It’s an intimate story that feels real.”
“I think of all the Star Wars films released so far, Rogue One is the most real one, which is about the people. The characters are very similar to us. They are heroes with no powers. What they have is a conviction and desire to change reality.”
That’s one of the highlights of this Star Wars entry in particular. This lot aren’t superheroes – and they’re not Jedis – they’re just normal folk, trying to stop a tyrannical regime. Understandably, that’s going to require a fair amount of physical exertion.
And stunt work.
Keeping with the spirit of The Force Awakens, which opted for plenty of practical effects over digital, Rogue One’s actors were really put through the ringer. While there were probably plenty of stuntpeople on set, it sounds like the onscreen talent weren’t immune to keepin’ it real.
“I took a lot of injuries,” Luna adds. “My chest still hurts a lot. There are some accidents that will actually end up in the final cut of the film. In a scene where we were running against a strong wind I badly hurt my cornea while trying to remove some debris from my eye. I used a patch during the last days of filming.”
Wonder if any will become as legendary as *that* Stormtrooper accident.
Directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, and Alan Tudyk, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is scheduled to open in UK and US cinemas on December 16, 2016.
Get A Closer Look At The Costumes Of ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”
Via Cnet.com:
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will deliver a new and different take on the Star Wars universe.
The first Star Wars spin-off hits theatres on 16 December. And Neal Scanlan, one of the special effects Jedi masters working on the movie, reckons British director Gareth Edwards has something new for fans. “What’s amazing and exciting about ‘Rogue One’,” said Scanlan, “is that Gareth Edwards is a young, dynamic guy who’s brave enough to throw out the rule book.”
“It’s very respectful,” said Scanlan, “but he’s stamped his own personality on it.”
Scanlan is one of the minds behind the creatures and droids in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Rogue One”. CNET spoke to him at London’s Pinewood studios, where parts of “The Force Awakens” and “Rogue One” were shot — and after speaking to us, Scanlan had to nip back to work on the new movie.
He was speaking at a launch event for Gillette’s new Star Wars-branded Mach 3 razors. The accompanying advert was shot on the movie’s set with extras and production design that appears in the film, giving us another look at droids, vehicles and costumes glimpsed in trailers.
Scanlan was one of the people who brought to life BB-8, the ball-shaped breakout star of “The Force Awakens”. From the moment J.J. Abrams first sketched the round robot on a napkin, Scanlan knew the cute droid would be something special. And now the effects whiz predicts “Rogue One” droid K-2SO will have a similar effect on audiences.
He describes the new droid as “full of attitude” and very different from previous humanoid droid C-3PO.
The lanky K-2SO is played by “Firefly” actor Alan Tudyk, whose performance was motion-captured while he wore stilt-like prosthetic legs. The sophisticated prosthetics let Tudyk jump around even though he was standing a foot above the ground, making K-2SO “the first droid with athletic prowess”.
The motion-captured Star Wars droids are an example of real and computer effects combined. Still, Scanlan who previously worked for Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and did animatronics for movies including “Babe” and “Labyrinth”, professes his fondness for practical effects over CGI.
“Something deep inside us knows when something is real,” he said. “It may not be as mind-blowing [as CGI], but we accept it in our heart and soul.”
A combination of practical and CGI effects gives the best of both worlds, Scanlan believes. “We’re at the point where we can find a middle ground we haven’t fully explored yet,” he said. “It’s a great place to be.”
Secrets of the TIE Striker
Via Ew.com:
You know the traditional bowtie shaped TIE Fighters, but Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will introduce fans to a whole new make and model — the fang-shaped TIE Striker.
Using one of the new Hasbro toys as a model, I walk through what we know so far about this previously unseen weapon of the Imperial war machine.
Although old-school TIEs definitely can fly within planetary atmospheres, they’re not ideal for that purpose. The mythological tech of Star Wars suggests those vertical, solar array wings are great for space, but the flat, pointed wings of Strikers are specially designed for screaming through environments of denser air and clouds.
The Striker also has a larger central pod, which is useful for shuttling materials as well as personnel. That’s why we’ll see these vehicles in action primarily on Scarif, the tropical world used by the Empire as a base of operations for the construction of the Death Star.
Entertainment Weekly will have more videos diving into Rogue One as the Dec. 16 release draws closer.

Star Wars-themed TV spot highlights Nissan Rogue safety technologies designed to “take on” any galaxy
Other promotional campaign elements revealed, including a numbered, limited-edition collectible helmet that comes with purchase of the 2017 Rogue: Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition vehicle
Nissan’s Ultimate Access Sweepstakes offers fans a chance to attend the “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” movie opening at El Capitan Theater in Hollywood
Nissan today unveiled expanded details of its new promotional campaign in support of the upcoming film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” The newly revised 2017 Nissan Rogue compact SUV is the centerpiece of the fully integrated campaign that features Star Wars-themed TV ads, social and experiential content.
As one of five global brands joining with Lucasfilm to launch promotional campaigns for the first-ever standalone Star Wars story, Nissan also debuted today a numbered, limited-edition, full-sized-replica Death Trooper helmet that comes with purchase of the previously announced 2017 Nissan Rogue: Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition vehicle.
“Nissan’s new custom-designed campaign aims to provide Nissan and Star Wars fans exclusive access to the popular franchise in ways they’ve never seen before,” said Jeremy Tucker, vice president, Marketing Communications & Media, Nissan North America. “Through this exciting campaign, Nissan offers customers new Star Wars experiences as well as a unique look at what driving with the advanced technologies already available on Nissan’s industry-leading cars, trucks and SUVs brings.”
The “Battle Tested” TV campaign launching on Oct. 31 includes one 30-second national spot that begins airing on Halloween, as well as a full 60-second hero version of the spot in cinemas and a flight of sales and dealer-engagement ads and that will follow later this fall. The 30-second hero spot takes place in a fictional Nissan test facility where engineers put vehicles through a series of routine safety tests and driving obstacles. This time, however, the Nissan Rogue and its driver are surrounded by Star Wars-themed simulations in the midst of an epic battle. A final test demonstrates the Rogue’s class-leading Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection* as the driver navigates through a rugged obstacle course, dodging stormtroopers, rebel fighters and otherworldly debris in the vehicle’s path.
The spot highlights the comprehensive suite of Intelligent Safety Shield technologies available on the 2017 Nissan Rogue, including Intuitive All-Wheel Drive and the Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection system. Forward Emergency braking with Pedestrian Detection can provide audio and visual display warnings to help alert the driver of a potential frontal collision. If a collision is unavoidable, the feature can engage the brakes to help reduce both the speed of the impact and the severity of the collision. The system is also designed to help avoid or mitigate frontal collisions with pedestrians, using a camera-based system to recognize human shapes.
“Showcasing Nissan’s advanced driver assistance systems in a simulated Star Wars environment, raises awareness for the robust technology offering on the newly refreshed Nissan Rogue in a very different way,” added Tucker. “The message pairs Nissan’s brand-DNA of driving excitement with relevant product information about how our vehicles are engineered to help our customers safely take on whatever out-of-this-world obstacles that they may encounter.”
In addition to the regional TV advertising rolling out later this year, the campaign includes robust digital and social content to complement and amplify the “Battle Tested” messaging across all channels.
Launching with the advertising on Oct. 31 is Nissan’s Ultimate Access Sweepstakes. This sweepstakes, which runs Oct. 31 through Nov. 27, gives fans a chance to attend the “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opening night at the El Capitan theater in Hollywood. Beginning on Oct. 31, fans may register for a chance to win at NissanUSA.com/StarWarsRogueOne (subject to the official rules listed on this site; no purchase is necessary to enter or win.)
