George Lucas Offered “Advice” For Star Wars: Rogue One

Via Gamespot.com:
Star Wars creator George Lucas visited the set of Rogue One and gave director Gareth Edwards some “advice,” it’s been revealed. Edwards appeared on a France’s TMC network recently to promote Rogue One and he recalled what Lucas had to say about the sci-fi spinoff.

“He said, ‘Don’t screw it up,'” Edwards joked, according to ComicBook.com. Lucas went on to make a self-deprecating joke about how Rogue One would benefit from lots of CGI. “He joked a lot about how we should do more in the computer, and not build so much,” Edwards said.

The Star Wars prequel trilogy was criticized for its extended use of CGI, among other things. “We didn’t take his advice,” Edwards said. “We tried to shoot as much in-camera as possible.”

On a more serious note, Edwards said it was “surreal” to meet with Lucas and show him, the creator of the series, a Star Wars movie that he did not work on. “Like, that was really crazy,” Edwards said.

The director went on to say that he “felt for [Lucas]” in this situation, going on to say that Lucas was “incredibly gracious” during his visit.

Lucas made headlines last year when he spoke out to say Star Wars: The Force Awakens strayed from his vision for where the series would go.

Also in the interview, Edwards confirmed that Rogue One will not have the Star Wars franchise’s iconic opening crawl, which is no big surprise. Though there is no crawl, Edwards confirmed (via StarWarsNews.net) that there is a prologue sequence at the start of the film that will explain what happened 15 years before the events of the movie. Some of Rogue One’s trailers and TV spots have shown a young version of main character Jyn Erso; these scenes could be from the prologue.

Rogue One opens in theaters on December 16.

Felicity Jones On Why Her Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Character Won’t Be Sexualized

Via Glamour.com:

Growing up, I always felt that the Star Wars films belonged to the boys, no matter how much I played with lightsabers or wore my hair like Princess Leia’s. When the galaxy finally expanded to accommodate a female lead—Daisy Ridley’s Rey—in 2015’s The Force Awakens, I rejoiced. Now Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which takes place 34 years prior to Rey’s rise, thrusts another bold woman front and center: Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso. Jones’ character is rash, assertive, and unrestrained—messy, thrilling traits that too few actresses get to tap into in big-budget action movies. Jones well understands how Jyn changes the game: As a little girl in a town outside of Birmingham, England, she dreamed not of saving planets but of playing love-struck Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Today, at age 33, the Oxford-educated actress is officially getting her turn as a new kind of Disney princess: “a very contemporary, kick-ass princess,” she says.

Jones has built a résumé deep with roles of take-charge women like Jyn. Last fall she played a doctor one mental leap ahead of Tom Hanks’ smarty-pants professor in Inferno; next up she’s a mother desperate to shield her son from the ugliness of her cancer in A Monster Calls. (Her raw, intelligent performance could earn her a second Oscar nod; she received her first in 2015 for her portrayal of Jane Hawking in The Theory of Everything.) Says the self-proclaimed feminist: “What I love in my work is showing a full-sided woman, women who are strong but flawed.”

Forest Whitaker Launches Rogue One Auction For Charity

Via ew.com:

Forest Whitaker is channeling his own Force for Change. The actor, who portrays Saw Gerrera in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has launched Rogue One-themed auctions to help support his charity, the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative.

Fans can place bids on IfOnly (the same place where Harrison Ford auctioned off his Han Solo jacket from The Force Awakens) for four available prizes: two tickets to the Los Angeles premiere of Rogue One and the invite-only afterparty, a framed and autographed set photo of Whitaker in character as Saw, a Rogue One suitcase filled with a variety of collectibles, and a Rogue One baseball cap personalized by the actor.

Whitaker also launched an auction on Sotheby’s, offering fans the chance to see a special screening of the film in London and meet the actor at the reception.

Proceeds will go to support the organization, which seeks to “help societies impacted by destructive conflicts transform into safer and more prosperous communities” through various initiatives.

“Many of the wars we see around the world start as domestic conflicts that are fueled by external forces and powers,” Whitaker told Sotheby’s in an interview. “My view is that we can help peace if we help communities transform from the inside, on their own terms. This is where the young people I train and support through WPDI are so important. They can bring about positive change that is based on global awareness, but that remains in tune with local realities.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, directed by Gareth Edwards and also starring Felicity Jones, opens in theaters on Dec. 16.

Making the Rogue One U-wing Fighter

Via ew.com:

Step aboard the U-wing fighter, the newest Star Wars starship — but one with a retro vibe.

Rogue One is set just before the events in 1977’s Star Wars, so the machines of galactic battle needed to look similar to that era. Director Gareth Edwards also wanted something fresh, which led to the creation of this hybrid starship.

The U-wing is completely new to the Star Wars universe, but some of its pieces may look familiar, having been cribbed from previous aerial designs.

INTERCEPTOR WINGS

The Jedi Interceptor, a single-seat starfighter from the Star Wars prequels, was the preferred method of travel for the solitary members of the Jedi order.

Although it existed decades before the U-wing in the mythology, both ships share a forward-facing wing design, similar to a tuning fork.

The larger, troop-transporting U-wing can also retract those wings to form a more traditional airplane profile for maneuvering through heavier atmosphere.

El Capitan’s Limited ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Poster

Via Latimes.com:

Disney and Lucasfilm have announced that the tickets for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will go on sale Monday. And if you’re an Angeleno, the deal’s even sweeter: Specific venues in Los Angeles will be handing out exclusive “Rogue One” posters.

Check out the exclusive “Hope” poster that fans can get only for a limited time in Hollywood.

The first 1,000 folks to buy tickets in person at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood will receive a “Hope” poster (full image below).

“Rogue One” is the latest “Star Wars” offering, although it is not directly associated with the episodic story line featured in last year’s “The Force Awakens.” It is the first of the standalone films and is set during the “Age of the Empire” between “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” and “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope.”

The story is centered around a group of rebels who steal the plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the Death Star. The film premieres Dec. 16.

Twitter to Live-Stream ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Exclusive Footage and Q&A With Cast and Director

Via Variety.com:

Twitter this week will exclusively stream a special “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” event — including previously unreleased footage from the forthcoming Disney/Lucasfilm movie — followed by a Q&A with director Gareth Edwards and cast members.

The live-streaming event, hosted by Time Inc.’s People magazine, will start on Friday, Dec. 2, at 10 a.m. Pacific, from “a surprise location.” The video will be available worldwide on Twitter at RogueOne.twitter.com, in Twitter Moments, and via @StarWars and @people accounts, as well as on Twitter apps for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Xbox.

The marketing stunt comes ahead of the Dec. 16 theatrical bow of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” starring Felicity Jones and Diego Luna.

Twitter and Disney are promising fans behind-the-scenes commentary during a live discussion with Edwards, along with Lucasfilm president and producer Kathleen Kennedy and cast members including Jones, Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed.

Fans can submit questions on Twitter for the cast to answer during the event, moderated by People deputy editor JD Heyman, by tweeting the hashtag #AskRogueOne. Fans can also Tweet with the following hashtags and a Star Wars Twitter emoji will automatically appear: #RogueOne, #DeathStar, #StarWars and #StarWarsRogueOne. The live stream will be available to anyone via Twitter’s channels, whether they’re logged in or not.

“Our collaboration with Disney and People will give fans fresh and exciting live ‘Star Wars’ content that they can view and tweet about all on the same platform,” said Twitter COO Anthony Noto.

For Twitter, the “Rogue One” deal marks its latest attempt to build the social service into a bigger destination for live video as a way to attract more users — and keep them on Twitter longer. The company’s live-streaming deals include its pact with the NFL for “Thursday Night Football.” In August, Twitter live-streamed BuzzFeed’s red-carpet coverage from the “Suicide Squad” premiere in New York.

People magazine also is releasing a special newsstand edition on Nov. 30 called “Star Wars: The Secrets of Rogue One,” featuring a virtual-reality bonus pack including goggles, in addition to an original special on the film premiering Nov. 30 on Time Inc.’s People/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN).

Grand Moff Tarkin In New Rogue One Teaser

Via Ew.com:

We’ve just gotten a Tarkin tease.

The Imperial commander played by the late Peter Cushing in 1977’s original Star Wars has long been rumored to make an appearance in Rogue One, which takes place just prior to the events of that first film.

Now, at long last, in a teaser to promote the advance ticket sales that began at midnight on Monday, we catch a glimpse from behind of the resurrected villain, watching from afar as his precious Death Star is assembled.

We don’t see the character’s face, of course, but the head, the hair, the ears, the costume – come on. There is no doubt.

Cushing died in 1994, but the character has lived on in comics, cartoons, and novels, and even walked the bridge of a Star Destroyer in the final moments of 2005’s Revenge of the Sith, overseeing the framework construction of the Death Star.

He was played in that movie by Wayne Pygram, in make-up designed to recreate Cushing’s razor-cheekboned appearance.

This time, rumors have circulated that Cushing himself would be recreated digitally for a brief appearance in Rogue One. Michael Douglas was made miraculously younger in Marvel’s Ant-Man, as was Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War. HBO’s Westworld has also done uncanny work de-aging Anthony Hopkins. But in each case, the actor was involved in the digital rejuvenation, providing a baseline performance for the visual effects artists to work with.
