STAR WARS: KANAN – THE LAST PADAWAN #1

Via Ign.com:

Kanan: The Last Padawan is the fourth Star Wars comic Marvel has launched in as many months. This series is the first, however, not to be set during the period between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Instead, it ties into the Star Wars Rebels animated series and explores the past of aspiring Jedi-turned-smuggler and rabble-rouser Kanan Jarrus. With Rebels executive producer Greg Weisman at the helm, it should come as no surprise that this series is every bit the worthy addition to the franchise Marvel’s other projects are.

Rather than cover similar ground to that of the Kanan-centric Star Wars: A New Dawn novel, The Last Padawan further dials back the clock to the waning days Clone Wars. In this period, Kanan was a Jedi trainee named Caleb Dume still learning the ropes and getting his first taste of battle. The flashback approach means this book is accessible even for those not familiar with Rebels. Only one scene focuses on the present-day Rebels timeline, and even that stands out as unnecessary. I’m not sure this book would benefit from any sort of ongoing interplay between past and present.

STUART IMMONEN Joins MARVEL’S STAR WARS

Via Newsarama.com:

Marvel’s Star Wars series has nabbed a new star artist.

Hot on the heels of Jon Cassaday announcing that June’s Star Wars #6 would be his last issue, on Tuesday Marvel announced that All-New Captain America artist Stuart Immonen would be joining the series in July’s Star Wars #8. Marvel states that a “very special guest artist” will be drawing Star Wars #7, between Cassaday and Immonen’s runs.

Immonen comes to the Star Wars title after a brief run on All-New Captain America, and has previously worked on many of Marvel’s top books including New Avengers, All-New X-Men and Ultimate Spider-Man. Although the cartoonist hasn’t done any official work for the Star Wars franchise at either Marvel or the previous comics licensor Dark Horse, Immonen has done numerous illustrations featuring Star Wars characters before. Immonen’s interest in Star Wars as a fan went so far as building a lightsaber prop with his son, as well as numerous LEGO creations of various characters, vehicles, and locations from the Star Wars movies.

John Cassasay Done with Marvel’s Star Wars after Issue 6 – Stuart Immonen In

Via Official John Cassaday on Facebook:

While wrapping up my final issue (#6) and the first arc of STAR WARS, I thought I’d be remiss to not show the process of our very first cover. With this being the first issue, I needed to show the cast but didn’t want to go the movie poster montage route (of course, there’d be time for that later). There was a lot to fit in, so I went with what reminds me a lot of the publicity shots the cast did, especially for the first two films. Action poses from all, sort of backed into a corner and essentially contained to the space of an 8X10 glossy… Maximum impact in a small space. And what’s a Star Wars first issue cover without star fighters? So X-Wings and TIE fighters made their way in. Notice I initially had a set of Vader style TIE fighters in the center, but our friends at Lucasfilm balked at having more than one (there was a fleet constructed, in my mind), so I scrapped them in favor of more standard issue ships.

As a framing element I wanted the ever recognizable silhouette of Darth Vader. At first, I was just going to place a star field in there, but in the end, I couldn’t resist using the lightspeed effect. It’s just so symbolic of the franchise. I also like how it emanates from Luke, reinforcing the Christ-like “chosen one” aspect. Digital coloring by Laura Martin. And just to be a completist, I’ve also thrown in the 2nd and 3rd printing covers.

Marvel releases first art from ‘Force Awakens’ prequel comic

Via EW.com:

J.J. Abrams still hasn’t revealed much about the upcoming franchise-restarting Star Wars: The Force Awakens, beyond the occasional trading card hints. Expect to get some teases about Episode VII starting in September, though, when Marvel debuts the new comic series, Shattered Empire. It’s one of two new Star Wars series that will comprise a new saga called Journey to the Force Awakens. (That means the full title will be Star Wars: Journey to the The Force Awakens: Shattered Empire, which is disappointingly less colonic than Star Wars: X-Wing: Rogue Squadron: Battleground: Tattooine.)

Marvel released the first official art from Shattered Empire today. It’s a group shot of the original Star Wars cast, smiling—essentially identical to the last shot of Return of the Jedi. That would seem to imply that Shattered Empire will pick up right after the Battle of Endor, and might be the first step in Disney’s attempt to craft a new history of Star Wars, separate from the Expanded Universe that flourished in the ’90s.

GEORGE LUCAS Visits NYC Comic Shop For STAR WARS COMICS

If you missed our post on Facebook, more info via newsarama.com:

Comic creators sometimes lose touch with their creations and end up buying their newest adventures just like everyone else; and now you can count George Lucas as among those.

New York comic store chain Midtown Comics revealed via Instagram that filmmaker George Lucas stopped by their Times Square location on Monday looking for some specific comics.

According to an interview with Page Six, Lucas browsed for about 15 minutes, specificially looking at the new Star Wars products. An unnamed Midtown employeetold Page Six that Lucas said he hadn’t read any of the new Star Wars comics, and the writer/director left the store with the debut issues of Star Wars, Darth Vader and Princess Leia from Marvel — as well as an issue of Heavy Metal.

Although it might seem strange for Lucas to visit a comic store, the filmmaker has long had an association comics — even being a co-owner in a local comic store’s comic art gallery in the 1970s. Former Marvel Editor-In-Chief Jim Shooter has stated in the past that George Lucas personally came to Marvel before the debut of Star Wars to pitch the movie as a licensed comic series.

Why You should be reading the NEW Marvel Star Wars Comics!

Via Moviepilot.com:

Greetings from a galaxy far far away! So with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens later this year, it’s understandable why more products like comics and a new animated show Star Wars: Rebels (2014) are being released prior to this.

Over at Disney, they’re wanting to expand the new Star Wars canonical universe, now that pretty much all books, comics, tv shows and video games that had different stories based in the same universe as our favourite heroes has been declared non-canon. So therefore is not a part of the on-screen Star Wars Universe we’ve seen and will see once again on December 18th, 2015.

The only canonical pieces of Star Wars that is a part of the overall plot are as follows;

All 6 Star Wars films
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Lucasfilm, yeah the company that made Star Wars gave comment.

“This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align.”

SALVADOR LARROCA’S DARTH VADER SKETCHBOOK

Via Marvel.com:

Hot on the heels of the launch of Marvel’s all-new STAR WARS ongoing series comes the second title set in that Galaxy Far, Far Away—STAR WARS: DARTH VADER. The book boasts not only fan-favorite writer Kieron Gillen, but equally acclaimed artist Salvador Larroca, both creators working hard to bring the Dark Lord of the Sith to the front for new adventures in the Star Wars Universe.

We got with Salvador to take a peek behind the scenes of his amazing art on the series and get into his head for how he approached the saga, as well as the villain that we all love to hate.

Marvel.com: Salvador, from a design standpoint, did you approach the Star Wars Universe any differently than any of your other comic projects?

Salvador Larroca: Well, I think that a more realistic style works for this series far better than any kind of super heroic look. I try to fit the style to the project, and I see DARTH VADER as more realistic—very much like the films. To me, a book where the Star Wars characters don’t like how they do in the films is not a Star Wars book. Han has to be Han, Luke has to look like Luke and Vader has to be that friendly guy we all know…
