Marvel Releases Preview For Star Wars Series Lando #1

Marvel Comics are opening up another portion of the Star Wars universe for their readers next month, when they roll out Lando #1.

The publisher has released its first preview pages from the issue, which you can see (along with the official write-up for the series and solicitation text) below.

This July, straight out of a galaxy far, far away comes a brand new limited series starring the one and only Lando Calrissian! Today, Marvel is pleased to present your first look at LANDO #1 from New York Times Bestselling creators Charles Soule (Death of Wolverine, Inhuman, She-Hulk) and Alex Maleev (Daredevil, Spider-Woman, Moon Knight)! Marvel’s Star Wars Comic Makes A Massive Change To Han Solo

Star Wars is in the process of rebuilding its official canon after Disney made the decision to detonate thirty-five years of accumulated backstory last year. Thanks to a handful of new novels, The Clone Wars and Rebels TV shows, and the movies themselves, parts of the universe are already in place, but as partners such as book publisher Del Rey and comics powerhouse Marvel scramble to fill in the gaps before Episode VII’s launch, there are still plenty of opportunities to drop proton torpedo-sized story bombs on Star Wars fans.

And the biggest one of these so far has just hit. For those yet to read the latest issue of Marvel’s ongoing Star Wars line of comics, consider this a spoiler warning. For others, there’s something you need to know about Han Solo. He may be a smuggler, a scoundrel, and stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder, but Solo is also — according to issue six of Marvel’s comic — a married man. The latest comic unveils one Sana Solo, a female human character first introduced as a mysterious masked figure searching for Han in Tatooine’s Mos Eisley cantina.

How Marvel’s Star Wars Comics Connect A New Hope to Empire Strikes Back

So, you want to become an expanded universe reader. The Expanded Universe is the term fans dubbed for the Star Wars products that existed outside the core of the films. If you’re coming to it now, you’re in luck, as it just had a reboot of sorts.

The old Expanded Universe tried to maintain itself within the larger canon story of Star Wars as best it could, but across thirty years and literally hundreds of books and thousands of comic book issues, that task was nigh-impossible. With the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm, they established a new “Story Group,” and made those old Expanded Universe stories into “Legends.” The new Story Group has the task of making everything Star Wars fit into one, cohesive, all-canon story, from the live-action films to the animated series to the comic books and novels, and even storylines that happen in video games!

But where does that leave you, the growing Star Wars fan who is looking to check out the comics and novels for the first time? Well, it leaves you in a pretty good position, actually. Marvel Comics started up new Star Wars comics in January 2015, with a gradual addition of one per month. Star Wars is the name of the flagship title, principally starring Luke Skywalker, and also featuring Han Solo, Leia, Darth Vader, and even Boba Fett. Darth Vader occurs exactly concurrently with Star Wars. This ongoing series features Vader as the protagonist, telling some identical events from his perspective, and showing what else the Sith Lord is up to as he attempts to re-establish himself after the failure of the first Death Star’s destruction. Princess Leia features a side-mission for her, and the only book not in the original trilogy era, Kanan, features the lead from the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

Disney Plans Marvel, Star Wars TV Channels

Disney is reportedly mulling over the idea of TV channels dedicated entirely to Marvel and Star Wars.

According to Daily Finance, CEO Bob Iger revealed it during a conference call with investors when he was asked if the company planned to launch its own streaming service, reported Ace Showbiz.

“We have said that with these channels and these brands ESPN, ABC, Disney, maybe even down the road something related to Star Wars and Marvel, we do have an ability as a company to take product, specifically filmed entertainment, television, movies, directly to consumers,” he said.

Marvel superheroes are currently booming on the big and small screens. After rolling out Avengers: Age of Ultron, the company is prepping for Ant-Man on July 17 and filming Captain America: Civil War for 2016 release.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD and Daredevil are among the TV adaptations. Star Wars, meanwhile, is getting an overhaul on the silver screen with JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens due December 18.

A spin-off Rogue One is expected to follow in 2016 and Star Wars Episode VIII in 2017. Two more movies are also in the works. On TV, there is Star Wars Rebels.

IDW AND MARVEL ANNOUNCE “STAR WARS” PARTNERSHIP

It’s May 4 — otherwise known as Star Wars Day stemming from the “May the 4th be with you” pun — and IDW Publishing has some news befitting the date. CBR has the exclusive first details that the latest extension of IDW and Marvel’s partnership involves the “Star Wars” comic book franchise, with IDW developing Star Wars-specific versions of both their acclaimed Artist’s Edition line and the Micro Collectors Fun Pack format.

“Marvel has been a terrific and loyal partner, and Star Wars represents an incredible opportunity to further expand our relationship,” IDW President and COO Greg Goldstein said in a statement.

Specific details of the contents of IDW’s “Star Wars” Artist’s Edition have not yet been released, but it will celebrate the original Marvel “Star Wars” series from the ’70s, which included work by notable creators including Carmine Infantino, Howard Chaykin, Walt Simonson, Al Williamson and Tom Palmer. The “Star Wars” Artist’s Edition is scheduled for release in late fall of this year.

First introduced in 2010, IDW’s Artist’s Edition line presents oversized hardcovers aiming to reproduce original comic book art at its full, original size. Several Marvel stories have received the Artist’s Edition treatment, including Simonson’s “Thor,” John Romita’s “Amazing Spider-Man,” John Byrne’s “Fantastic Four” and David Mazzucchelli’s “Daredevil: Born Again.”

“The collaboration between IDW and Marvel has produced some of the most immaculate collections of reprinted original comic book material ever to be offered,” Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel said in the announcement. “Now with the addition of the Marvel Comics’ 1977 ‘Star Wars’ being gathered in this over-sized format, this collection truly is a pantheon of content that any and all fans of Star Wars will want to get their hands on.”

The “Star Wars Classic” Micro Collectors Fun Pack is also scheduled to debut in the fall. IDW’s Micro Collectors Fun Packs are all-ages releases aimed at mass-market retailers like Target or Toys R Us as well as comic shops, and include a micro-sized comic book reprint, along with extras like stickers or posters.

Marvel’s “Remastered” Original Star Wars Comic Adaptation

Marvel have taken the reins on Star Wars comics this year, but it wasn’t the first time they’ve handled a galaxy far, far away; they also released the first comic adaptation of the movie back in 1977. Now the company is honoring their Star Wars past with an updated, recolored release of the original series.

The first six issues of the original Marvel Star Wars series will be gathered into one collection as a new graphic novel to be released next month. Although it’s not the first time the classic comics have been made available again (Dark Horse released omnibus volumes of the entire Marvel series while they had the Star Wars license), this new release features updated colors from Chris Sotomayor over the artwork originally drawn by Howard Chaykin, replacing the classic (and admittedly somewhat gaudier) color palette of the original comic. It has a much more modern look — see for yourself!
