Marvel’s Last Jedi Adaptation Reveals Luke Skywalker’s Final Words

Via Cbr.com:

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi Adaptation #6

In Marvel’s adaptation of Star Wars: The Last Jedi from the film to comic pages, you’ll find little gems seen for the first time that make director Rian Johnson’s story all the more sweeter. In short, these scenes, whether it’s a subtle visual, someone’s thoughts or actual lines spoken, act as bonus scenes.

The final issue brings the movie’s closing battle to life, focusing on Luke Skywalker facing off against Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren in one of the franchise’s most memorable moments. However, the big takeaway here is that we’re now privy to Luke’s final words, or more specifically his inner thoughts, as he dies and becomes one with the Force.

This adaptation hasn’t shied away from giving fans more of Luke, which goes a long way to make things up for those who felt he was robbed of a stronger presence in the film. In these comics, we saw him mourning the death of Han Solo, learned his biggest regret about how he handled the Jedi Order when Darth Vader died, and where he felt he let Rey down in training her as his successor. Now, we get further insight into how he views his time with Ben Solo and his nephew’s eventual fall from grace, with all these emotions barreling into their climactic fight.

Before we get to Luke’s final thoughts, we see him accepting does he has to teach Kylo one final, strict lesson, reiterating that no matter how much hope everyone has, Ben’s long gone. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,” he says as he stares down Kylo’s fleet on the salt planet of Crait. “One final chance to set things right,” he continues, as he lures Kylo out for one last duel.

Star Wars Will Fill In Gaps Between A New Hope And Empire Strikes Back

Via Cinemablend.com:

If you’ve been reading Marvel Comics canonical Star Wars series, you know it begins just moments after the end of A New Hope as the Rebellion is still celebrating their victory over the Empire. Now, 38 issues later, Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca are beginning a new arc that will steer the storyline towards The Empire Strikes Back. The series will soon explain how and why the Rebellion settles on Hoth for their new base. What’s more, upcoming storylines will borrow from elements of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, offering some interesting development opportunities for the central heroes. Gillen explains:

“This is just as much about the rise of Luke, Han, and to a slightly different degree Leia. By the time we meet up with Han in Empire you’ve got Leia saying that he’s a born leader of men. That means he’s been leading men! He’s called Han Solo, Solo being the key word, but he’s been in a position of authority at some point.”

Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca are no strangers to Star Wars comics. They previously teamed for the critically-acclaimed Darth Vader series that initially ran parallel to the main Star Wars title’s first 25 issues. With their first arc on Star Wars proper, Gillen and Larroca will bring Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie to the remains of Jedha, the holy world of the Jedi Order that was obliterated by the Death Star in Rogue One. Gillen tells CBR that the journey is one that will be particularly resonant for Leia. After all, the Princess’ homeworld of Alderaan was itself destroyed by the Empire’s ultimate weapon. Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker will learn of the specific sacrifice of Jyn Erso and the others that gave their lives to ensure that the Death Star plans made it into the hands of the Rebellion.

MARVEL’S STAR WARS SERIES GETS NEW CREATIVE TEAM

Via Starwars.com:

KIERON GILLEN AND SALVADOR LAROCCA WILL TAKE THE REINS THIS NOVEMBER WITH STAR WARS #38.Marvel’s flagship Star Wars title has new masters now.

Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larocca, the writer-artist team behind the critically-acclaimed Darth Vader series, will take over Marvel’s Star Wars beginning with issue #38 this fall.

“My aim’s simple – to do what Salva and I did with Darth Vader, but for Leia, Luke and Han. As in, chart the rise and fall of the Rebellion between A New Hope and the Empire Strikes Back, how it changes them all and how it changes the universe,” said Gillen. “So a simple aim, but as nightmarishly tricky to pull off as dropping a proton torpedo down a thermal exhaust port. But hopefully as thrilling if we pull it off. I can’t wait till you see it up. First up: the post-apocalyptic hell that remains of Jedha after the Death Star punched a hole through its mantle.” Get a first look at David Marquez’s cover for Star Wars #38 below.

Darth Vader Comic May Explain Why Luke Skywalker Went Into Exile

Via Comicbook.com:

Later this year, Star Wars fans will have one of their burning questions about Luke Skywalker answered. When The Force Awakens hit theaters, fans learned the Jedi was missing-in-action as he had dropped off the galaxy’s radar. The film followed the Resistance as they tried to track down Luke whilst trying to keep the First Order off their trail, but many wondered why Luke exiled himself in the first place. However, it looks like the most recent issue of Marvel’s new Darth Vader comic may hint at the Jedi’s reasoning.

In Darth Vader #2, readers were treated to a panel which saw the Sith Lord explain why Jedi outside of the Great Jedi Purge did nothing to help those in danger. The genocide is a well-known bit of Star Wars canon, and fans will remember the prequel films introduced Order 66 which catalyzed the purge. Revenge of the Sith fully explained why the Jedi Order was all but decimated by the time Return of the Jedi came around, the Darth Vader comic reveals surviving Jedi did not fight against the Purge thanks to the Barash Vow.

“Any Jedi pursuing Barash has sworn to refrain from activities related to the order. Complete disengagement from anything but the Force. It is a type of penance. While a Barash-take would have felt the Purge, they would have not have allowed themselves to respond to it, or take action of any kind,” Darth Vader explained.

JOURNEY TO STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – CAPTAIN PHASMA #1!

The First Order Strikes Back! Your First Look at JOURNEY TO STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – CAPTAIN PHASMA #1!
Marvel Comics Presents the Essential Bridge Between STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI!

New York, NY—It’s the galaxy’s big mystery: How did Captain Phasma survive the destruction of the Starkiller Base in the final moments of Star Wars: The Force Awakens? All will be revealed this September, when superstar writer Kelly Thompson (Hawkeye, Star Wars Annual) teams with blockbuster artist Marco Checchetto (Star Wars: Shattered Empire, Star Wars: Screaming Citadel) to bring you JOURNEY TO STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – CAPTAIN PHASMA #1, a four-part miniseries bridging the events between Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi!

Captain Phasma’s fate seemed like it was sealed when she was cornered by the Resistance and thrown into a garbage compactor before the Starkiller Base was destroyed. But it’s going to take much more than that to keep this chrome-armored warrior down!

“The Star Wars films, with so many fantastic characters, obviously can’t be a ‘Phasma story,’ and it’s especially cool that Phasma is getting explored in depth in both her forthcoming novel and comic book,” said series writer Kelly Thompson. “The most exciting thing to me about our mini-series is that we were given the awesome responsibility of bridging a gap between Force Awakens and Last Jedi – of answering the question of what happened to Phasma after she went into that trash chute. Anytime you get to write official Star Wars is pretty incredible, but getting to decide what that link is, for a super intriguing character in some of the most epic movies of all time, is next level!”

As you prepare up to welcome Captain Phasma back into your life in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, don’t miss the thrilling and epic story of the First Order’s most formidable stormtrooper in JOURNEY TO STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – CAPTAIN PHASMA #1, on sale this September!

All of Marvel’s Star Wars Comics, Ranked

Via iO9.com:

It’s been two years since Marvel regained the rights to make Star Wars comics, and since then the publisher has released a ton of comics, both ongoing and miniseries. Want some recommendations on what’s out there? We’ve ranked them all, from the must-reads to the ones you should avoid like they were old Jar Jar Binks.

[A note going in: There’s a brand new Darth Maul comic but since only a single issue has been released, I’m not including it. The first issue is pretty intriguing, though, so if you like Maul, check it out! Also excluded are two one-shot comics: Vader Down, a solo tie-in to an event in the Darth Vader and Star Wars series (although it was very good), and C-3PO, which told the story of how the droid got his red arm in The Force Awakens (it was weirdly okay!).

Marvel’s Rogue One Comic Adaptation

Via Ew.com:

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may not have had an opening crawl or the word “episode” in its title, but like other Star Wars movies before it, will get a comic book adaptation. The six-issue Marvel comic, written by Jody Houser and illustrated by Emilio Laiso, will kick off in April. EW spoke with Hauser about her vision for the adaptation and how she thinks Rogue One differs from the rest of the Star Wars canon. Check that out below, along with two covers for the first issue, the second of which may answer the “Where’s Rey?” toy controversy.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How will the Rogue One adaptation compare to the film? What can you tease about how you’re splitting up the story into six parts? Will there be anything not seen in the film?

JODY HOUSER: The comics will definitely expand on what was seen in both Rogue One the film and the novelization. Lucasfilm and Gareth Edwards had a bunch of ideas for extra scenes and character moments that didn’t make it into the film. I’m having a lot of fun playing around with those. Adaptations across different forms of media have always been a great opportunity to explore other facets of the story, and we’re excited to have new material in the Rogue One comic.

There are a ton of things I like about Rogue One — highlighting desperate guerrilla nature of Rebels, Vader/Tarkin renaissance, and beautiful new planets, to name a few. What do you like about it? What are you particularly excited to tackle in your version of the story?

Aside from really enjoying a lot of the new characters, seeing a more fragile and grayer Rebel Alliance was one of the most intriguing parts of Rogue One for me. Outside of the battle between the Jedi and the Sith, which has always been a very clear black-and-white conflict, we see a very messy and very relatable struggle where making the right choices and figuring out the best course of action is rarely easy.

Rogue One has a noticeably darker tone than other Star Wars films. How do you think it fits into the franchise, and how are you replicating or modifying that tone for your version?

Rogue One definitely puts the “War” in Star Wars in a way that we haven’t necessarily seen in the movies before. Sure, we’ve had populated worlds and stations the size of moons blown up, Order 66, but we’re not used to ALL of our leads being expendable. We’re not used to seeing so much of the death and destruction close up. I think stripping away some of the fantasy and raising the stakes is a brave move, especially in a precedent-setting movie like this. It adds weight and meaning to the events that immediately follow in A New Hope by showing the cost. Of course, I did start my comics career writing primarily horror and tragedy/tear-jerker shorts, so I may be a bit biased here…

Although there are a few cameos and shoutouts, Rogue One is populated almost entirely by new characters. Who are your favorites, and why? Who are you most excited to tackle?

I love the characters who stole the movie as much as everyone else — Chirrut, Baze and K-2SO, I would say — but I find something really compelling about the trio of Bodhi, Jyn, and Cassian. You have the new convert, the lapsed believer, and the life-long devout thrown together to work for a common goal. That’s a dynamic I’m excited to explore further.

Although there are several references to the Force, Rogue One has no actual Jedi, one of the most recognizable mainstays of the franchise. What is Star Wars for you without Jedi?

Star Wars is still a huge, huge universe, especially when you consider the are only a handful of Force users left alive at this point in history. I think it fits well with the more realistic feel of the story. At the same time, it’s fascinating to see what the Force means to those outside the Jedi and Sith dynamic, and how they relate to it — or perhaps how it uses them…

George Lucas Is A Big Fan Of Marvel’s Han Solo Comic

Via Gizmodo.com:

How do we know? Well, it’s because the creator of Star Wars asked artist Mark Brooks if he could buy every single page of art that Brooks drew for the first two issues of the new comic.

Brooks announced the news on his Facebook, where he seemed appropriately shocked and awed:

2016-08-03 22_48_30-It Turns Out the Biggest Fan of Marvel's Han Solo Comic Is George Lucas Himself

If you’re not up on the world of purchasing original comic art, suffice it to say this is actually pretty crazy. Usually even the biggest (and richest) fans only buy a specific page or two from a comic. I’ve literally never heard of anyone buying all the pages from a single comic issue before, let alone two issues. I also don’t think Lucas has shown anything approximating this level of interest in anything created as part of Disney’s new Star Wars regime before, so he must really, really like the comic.

These first two issues of Han Solo, written by Marjorie Liu, have been released if you want to track them down at your local comic store. I personally haven’t read them yet, but if nothing else, I’m guessing the art is pretty damned good.
