Protecting Episode VII

Via Gizmodo:

When it comes to spoilers, commenters from all corners of the internet are quick to demonize whoever leaks precious plot details, but when it comes to J. J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Wars VII, we can’t seem to help ourselves.

Anticipating our feverish need for insider info, Star Wars heads at Pinewood Studios, a English film studio and current keeper of mountains Star Wars’ spoilers, anticipated that sneaky UAVs would be a problem. Back in 2004, when Revenge of the Sith, commercial drones were not nearly as prolific as they are now, so in order to detect incoming rebels, the studio tried to purchase a “DroneShield” earlier this summer before the leaks even started happening, according to Motherboard.

AMC Preparing for Episode VII

Via Newsarama.com:

AMC Entertainment, the #2 theater chain in in the U.S., announced a plan to shareholders to accelerate the rollout of its ongoing “customer experience initiatives” by 20% this year – or approximately $39 million dollars – over what they had already planned to spend in the initiative, and will be primarily used to “support the acceleration of recliner re-seat initiatives, additional MacGuffins bars and IMAX screens.”

According to AMC, more recliner seats = higher revenue. During the second quarter of 2014, admissions revenues per screen increased by 33 percent at AMC’s 44 recliner re-seat locations.

“Our comfort and convenience strategic action front, best illustrated by our recliner reseats, continues to significantly outperform the industry, even in a cyclical year,” said Gerry Lopez, AMC president and chief executive officer in the release.

Why the acceleration during what’s a down year at the box office? AMC expects theatres benefiting from the accelerated investment to be “better positioned to capitalize on the anticipated improvements in the 2015 film line up.” Meaning 2014 didn’t have an Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars Episode VII (not to mentionJurassic WorldBond 24 and Fast and Furious 7), and 2015 does.

So what does this mean for you? If you live near an AMC theater, when Han Solo escorts a new generation of Rebel forces in the Millennium Falcon, you can likely watch with your feet up.

First look at Episode VII elements might be in Rebels

Via EW.com:

The team behind Disney’s other announced Star Warsfilmed story, the one that’s being released next month—Star Wars Rebels, which premieres Disney Channel before moving to Disney XD—is creatively in cahoots with the Episode VII team, EW has learned exclusively. Even though Rebels takes place years before the events of the first-released Star Wars film (Episode IV), and is an animated series rather than a feature film, Disney wants to make sure any creative elements introduced in Rebels align with the rest of the Star Wars canon. That way, even with multiple Star Wars projects in various stages of development at the same time, the brand’s world-building will continue in a cohesive and consistent manner.

“It’s a very integrated process, there’s real communication between all the filmmakers because we’re all part of a larger timeline,” says Rebels executive producer Simon Kinberg, who is also a creative consultant on Episode VII. “There is absolutely communication and integration between the different stories. We are very aware of what they’re doing in VII, and we also have to click into place with Episode IV.”

So you might see a new Star Wars city or a character in Rebels and not even realize until 14 months later (when Episode VII is scheduled to be released) that they’re also in the new film albeit presumably in some older form). And for fans of IV, V and VI, expect plenty of “set-ups and Easter eggs” to elements in those classics. “There are characters, vehicles, imagery that are introduced in the show before we’ve ever seen them in the movies, possibly including VII,” he said.

‘Game of Thrones’ Star Joins ‘Star Wars Episode VII’

Via Slashfilm.com:

If you’re good with a sword and appeared on Game of Thrones, apparently there’s a fair shot you can end up in a galaxy far, far away. Months after Thrones star Gwendoline Christie joined the cast of J.J. Abrams‘ Star Wars Episode VII, she’s now joined by another cast member. Miltos Yerolemou, who played Syrio Forel, the season one swordsman mentor to Arya Stark, has reportedly joined the film in an unknown role. Read more about the Miltos Yerolemou Star Wars 7 news below.

The BBC broke the news of the late addition to casting, but Lucasfilm declined to comment.

Considering Yerolemou is a accomplished swordsman, everyone is assuming he’ll play a character that wields a lightsaber in the highly anticipated sequel. However, that’s not a guarantee. We all assume Andy Serkis is playing someone created in performance capture, too, but no one knows for sure. (Same goes for Daisy Ridley as a Solo and Lupita Nyong’o as a Sith. All assumptions.)

The BBC report does say, however, that “his character in Star Wars is not thought to be a major one.” That, too, is a safe assumption considering the film has been shooting for some time now and recently started back up after a brief hiatus. If he was important in this film, he’d likely have been on set already. Still, a minor role in Episode VII doesn’t mean a minor role in Star Wars moving ahead. Among the Star Wars rumors most people take to be true are that minor characters in Episode VII will be major characters in Episodes VIII and even IX. Plus, just because we’re hearing about the casting now doesn’t mean it just happened.

Again though, the safest bet here is that Yerolemou plays some kind of bad guy who uses a lightsaber or possibly some other kind of long weapon. Maybe we see his face, maybe we don’t, but we do know it would be difficult for any actor to turn down any role in what’s one of the most secretive and anticipated films of all time.

Star Wars Episode VII open December 18, 2015. As if you didn’t already know that.
