Making ‘Star Wars: Commander’ Better

Via Venturebeat.com:

You might think that getting hacked is always a bad thing, but that’s not how the people who make games view it. And Disney Interactive’s Star Wars: Commander team are inviting everyone on the team to hack their game to make it more fun.

Over the last few days, everyone working on Star Wars: Commander set aside their typical work to partake in one of the company’s semi-regular hackathons. About once every four months, the studio asks everyone working on the game to come up with an idea that they want to try coding together in just a few days. The company then takes the best of those ideas and implements them into the final game. In fact, Star Wars: Commander, which is a defensive strategy game for mobile, probably wouldn’t have a basic feature like shield generators if it weren’t for a previous hackathon.

Star Wars: Commander is very important to Disney. Mobile games is an industry that will likely exceed $20 billion in revenues this year. Disney Interactive thinks that this game is its best bet to get a pick piece of that as the company actually removed some of its other apps from Google Play and the iOS App Store to focus all of its efforts on Commander. The hackathon is one of the ways that the company is working to keep Commander interesting and engaging for fans.

Accessible Star Wars Lets Disabled Feel The Force

Via Bbc.com:

A Star Wars sci-fi convention has been set up for people with disabilities. Feel the Force Day was set up so that as many people as possible could access and experience Star Wars.

Co-founder JJ Lucia-Wright was inspired to help organise the event after spending the past 10 years teaching a friend who is deaf and blind about the films.

People attending were encouraged to stroke a Wookie, sniff the scent of the Millennium Falcon and hug Princess Leia.

Warwick Davis who is currently filming the latest Star Wars instalment, made a surprise visit to the convention as Anna Todd reports.

Episode VII Resumes shooting after Harrison Ford injury

Via EW.com:

Star Wars: Episode VII has officially resumed shooting at Pinewood Studios outside of London after taking a brief hiatus due to the on-set accident that broke Harrison Ford’s leg on June 12. Since his character is a major part of the Episode VII story, this caused massive upheaval for the film schedule, which had to be reshuffled in the midst of production while the 72-year-old star recuperated.

As part of that reorganization, photography was placed on hold for two weeks this month, but the entire cast and crew returned to the U.K. this week and the film is officially going, well … full Force, according to sources close to the project.

Despite dire predictions that Ford’s injury would sidetrack him (and the movie) for as much as six months, the athletic actor proved to be far more resilient and was spotted back on his feet (sporting a hands-free leg crutch) just a few weeks after the accident, in which part of the set of the Millennium Falcon fell and struck him, fracturing the bone in his left leg.

Even more recently, he walked the red carpet for The Expendables 3, waving and smiling at photographers while strolling by with a barely perceptible limp. He also made an ALS ice bucket challenge, uploaded six days ago, which shows him in shorts and sneakers, with no evidence of leg atrophy or even a support cast. His rep told EW today that he hasn’t started shooting his own scenes yet, but will be soon.

Throughout Ford’s recovery, Lucasfilm and parent company The Walt Disney Co. have insisted that the Dec. 18, 2015 release date of the movie would not need to be altered. Photography is set to continue until mid-fall, and many cast members have continued to work this summer on scenes that haven’t required Ford’s presence.
