IT’S GREAT TO be a fan of something. Anything, really. Box car racing, soap carving, fly fishing, Taylor Swift—whenever you can find joy in a hobby it makes your life better. It gives you something to look forward to. But when an artist is a fan of something, everyone benefits, because their fandom often results in really pretty things.

Such is the case with Marc Hagan-Guirey. Technically, the London-based artist is a freelance digital designer, but that’s just his 9-to-5 gig. His extracurricular activity is much cooler: Using a scalpel to make hundreds of tiny, delicate cuts in 8.27 x 11.7-inch sheets of paper to recreate famous movie scenes. His latest foray? Carving out iconic moments from the Star Wars franchise. The project, which he calls Cut Scene, is an homage to a saga that’s been with him for a long time.

“I was a bit too young to catch them in the cinema the first time ’round, but my older brother by five years was the right age,” Hagan-Guirey says. “For that reason Star Wars has always been part of my life. I guess I was sort of indoctrinated into it.”

And the results of that indoctrination are stunning. Leia communicating through R2-D2, Han Solo trapped in carbonite, the Battle of Hoth—each moment is recreated with such intricate detail it almost seems impossible. (Work of a master, they are.) Each scene looks almost like it was 3-D printed or machine cut, but each one is, in fact, the work of one man with a pair of very talented hands.
